SIttin at work waiting for the worlds' WASP-y ish holiday party to wrap up so had some time to post since haven't really BS'd with y'all in a while.
- man oh man I'm STOKED for these 2 coordinator hires. This is the FIRST time I've sat back and thought we made the BEST hires we possibly could have. We didn't go for grey hairs or tenure, we went for results, and YOUTH. This game is changing and evolving every year and I'm pleased Joey is comfortable with trying against the grain ideas. I posted in another thread some very impressive stats for our new hires:
LEFTWICH: 11th in scoring offense, 6th in total offense, 6th in 3rd%. Also, BIG point....he called GJ Kinne's offense but GJ was very open that Leftwich called all the plays. This "kid" is also 30 lol.....
WOOD: wofford 10-3 and 2nd ranked defense in their conference, and was 26th in the nation overall. Troy- 11-2 and 8th in scoring defense. Tulane- 11-2 and 16th in total defense. Also he went 9-3 as the DC for Army.
Nothing is ever guaranteed but we didn't go "kick the tires" on old re tread guys that were fired from some other lateral program. This is not a knock on the previous hires at all, but this direction and thought process is something new for me as a Tech fan. Tech doesn't have any thing super "traditional" per say that the public can run with either so I'm happy we are going a different route. Pretty damn excited to see what these 2 new guys and their staffs can do. These hires just make perfect sense for us.
- getting J Rod back for his senior year is huge. The guy gets the absolute most out of his athletic ability. Why? Cause he never quits and is 100% every snap. He's fun to watch. Truthfully getting him back is landing a 5 star recruit. He's already game ready, don't have to worry about him, he's game ready, and and you're only going to get a year out of him anyhow (lol, wink). He was easily the best LB in the B12 this past season, and in my no shit opinion, the 2nd best is still here wearing #13. Ben Roberts is bad news bears and if keeps improving he's going to be a monster. I've also been very impressed with young Curry as well. He's a Roberts clone. I also really like what Dingle brings to the table as well. He's super raw but there isn't a single athlete on the roster that combines his athleticism vs speed as he does. Dude is 220+ and runs like a deer. He's twitchy as hell and has been our best blitzer and rusher IMO. I'd like to see if Coach Wood can use him as a nickel/safety type that can blitz and play the run.
- KITTLEY: man I'm puzzled on this one so much as we saw some very different stuff the last 2 weeks vs anything we've seen all year. My biggest issue with Kittley I had was his scripted and plotted drives were always great. But once a new chapter of the game happened.....we seemed to always go cold. We couldn't hold leads, and we couldn't gain ground at times. What drove me nuts (aside from the WR screens we couldn't execute) was we couldn't just simply run a 3rd and 4, for example, well. We had to church it up with some weird formations, or motions. or a trick play etc. I was so frustrated that we couldn't run STICK play or something over and over with ease. I never knew what we were truly good at on offense other than H counters to the best RB in tech histroy. Instead of oustmarting the other team, let's just have 5 plays we can run perfectly and we never got there. I also was frustrated as the concept of a slant/drag/mesh just wasn't on the table for some reason. We had WAAAAAAAYYYY too many plays where the QB can see the WR numbers if that makes sense. We ran gos, comebacks, or stops or screens what seemed to be exclusively. I'd argue this starting 4 WR's (douglas, eakin, kelly, conyers) is the most athletically balanced group we've ever had. Not saying the best! Nobody can touch #5....but as a group, this crew was talented. I wish we tried to get these guys moving in space more. Let these dudes run.
- QB for next season: Million dollar question- have we seen a healthy Morton? Ever? If the rumors are true about him needing a full surgery and possibly missing spring/summer Leftwich is gonna have a tough choice as Hammond is gonna be a baller. He looked way too comfy and natural in his limited time. Dude can run too. Sneaky fast....or just a white QB lol. (don't ban me).
- Overall the season was statistically a success as much as it was frustrating. It was hard to watch the offense sputter when they had so, so much talent at their skill spots. I'm also kinda curious how not good this squad would be if Tahj is never born.....the dude is a special athlete. We won't have someone as consistent like him again for a long, long time. He loves Tech and has been a great ambassador. News of other 5 stars leaving make me appreciate the Tahj types even more. That said, jKoby was my favorite recruite last year....and that includes Micah. He's gonna do some good shit for us with Cameron bein the spell type. I've never seen a TRUE rb with his speed since I came to Tech. McRoy had speed, but he wasn't nearly as talented or natural as Jkoby williams is.
Either way, hope everyone had a rad little Thanksgiving and are already "tabling work stuff for 2025". One last bowl game to go for us until the sad stretch.
Wreck em
ps- don't ask me for concert tickets. Besos.
