The second matchup against a team where you repeat them later in the schedule. This time, it's Oklahoma State, who rolls into Lubbock for a Sunday matinee, the first one on Tech's schedule since the season finale at Baylor in 2020-21. To be frank, this is one Tech should not drop, but it's the Big 12 and every one of them matter, so let's jump into it.
Texas Tech: KenPom 10, Offense 7, Defense 41
-Texas Tech is into the top-ten of the KenPom rankings and the NET for the first time this season after a double-digit win against Cincinnati. The Red Raiders are likely to get into the media top 25 if Tech is able to find a win against the Cowboys.
-The story of this team has been the offense, having three of the top 10 most efficient offensive games in program history this season. The Red Raiders are 12th in EFG%, 13th in 3P% and 41st in 2P% while also having the 16th best offensive rebounding mark in the country. Tech's well above average at taking care of the basketball, led by Elijah Hawkins high-level assist to turnover rate, especially in the Big 12.
-To me, I've probably well underrated Toppin's impact on the boards because when I think of this team, I think of the team rebounding aspect from guys like Chance and Overton chipping in 5-6 boards consistently, but from the numbers, Toppin is one of the most prolific rebounders in the country. He ranks 10th among all players nationally on the offensive boards and 35th on the defensive boards.
Oklahoma State: KenPom 117, Offense 156, Defense 113
Projected Margin: Texas Tech 84-65
-The Cowboys have yet to win on the road in the Big 12 with their lone wins have come against Kansas State and Colorado at home and are coming off a strong first half against Arizona before things came off the rails in the second where they lost by 14.
-The best part of this Oklahoma State team is their ability to get to the line, the 16th best FTA/FGA alongside 24.8% of their points coming from the charity stripe, the 6th best in the country. What's noticeable is that each of OSU's most utilized players are sub-80% shooters from the stripe. OSU's best free throw shooter on the year is the former Red Raider Robert Jennings, who is making his return to the United Supermarkets Arena after two seasons in Lubbock, surviving a coaching change as well.
-This team doesn't have many on-paper three-point shooters but F Marchelus Avery is the most prolific. The 6-8 forward shoots it at 36.6% with a team leading 34 made threes.
-The last extremely notable thing on Oklahoma State is starting PG Arturo Dean. Dean is one of the nation's best guards in regards to being able to create turnovers defensively. He is nearing a 5% steal rate, which ranks 16th among all players.
It's one that Tech should be able to take advantage of, the same with TCU early next week, so hopefully the Red Raiders are able to do so.
