Really fun 6-3 win for the Red Raiders over the Cornhuskers.

Some thoughts…

-Zane Petty threw okay. He’s found the zone more than he had in this outing in the past and over the spring. Think he’ll be alright, just not his best outing.

-Was impressed with Heuer, working up to 95. It’s easy to see why the Guardians picked him last June in the 16th round and Tech is lucky to have him here. It is exciting to have that kind of pitching prospect on campus. Hit the zone well and worked in the cutterish slider that can help keep hitters off the FB.

-Free got out of the jam in the sixth and it was really impressive. Going to need him to be that guy again for this team out of the pen. Hopefully Tech can find someone to fill the “Beckel” role from last year.

-Cade McGee is a really nice third baseman, dude makes it look routine over there.

-TJ Pompey continues to have a nice start to the college career. Another knock and he hasn’t looked out of place at short.

-Woodcox had a solid day at the plate. Couple knocks, which was nice to see.

-Kash and Bazzell haven’t been great to start but it’s two games, not necessarily worried yet. Speaking of Bazz, that was a nice throw to gun down the runner in the fifth.

-Big time rally and a big time hit from Lopez to take the lead. Fun night.

Will follow up with quotes from Tad, Austin Green and Ryan Free…

On Heuer:

"That's what we've seen from Mac really since the day you know we saw in pitch in high school. He's very competitive kid with a really good fastball and he's gonna keep getting better. Matt's done a good job with him. Really didn't have his best reputuire today. But he had enough and he's competitive. He's confident and had enough to get through it. McGee turned a big double play in that one inning. Two outs on one pitch in a kids first college inning."

On Petty:

"Just kind of had to be ready after the second inning. You know, walking the first two guys in the second, you know, Hey, man, I can't let that happen again and the third. It's one of those situations that you want to let guys pitch through it where you want to let guys pitch through it. But when you got bullets down there that got a chance to pitch good, you gotta use em."

On Green & Woodcox:

"Well, you're talking about a guy left on right. Thought it was a good matchup. We're counting on all those guys. Woodcox was really good in all the roles he was in today. We need to get contributions up and down at roster. That's what part of this weekend is guys understanding to be ready. We got some guys hadn't been in there that you know same way."

On Free:

"I mean he definitely executed some pitches. So again, like we're probably a little farther along with some of that stuff than we have been in the past because we got to school a little early. We'll tip our hat to our administration."

On Heuer's stuff:

"As you go, it's gonna keep going. Like his first college and his timing probably wasn't great. It was good enough, it has some late life."

On Hutyra:

"Parker is very competitive. You go back and look at his high school career. He took the ball and he went seven innings. To put him in a shorter stint, his stuff is going to play up a bit. Very much like Vance was. He wants the ball. e's classified as a freshman. And I'm sure we'll see some of that at some point. So not really any big surprise really glad we got him in there for his first college inning."

FROM AUSTIN GREEN

On the big hits:

"Yeah, I looked in the lineup, didn't see my name. You know, just try to be that good team player. You know, each day calls for something new and try to do my best to stay prepared. Knew there could be a scenario where my name gets called with the RHP."

On the switch hitting stuff (cc. @UpperDeckRaider)

"Me and Tad talked a little bit. I hit left on left a bit in the fall. Picked up switch hitting again two weeks ago and got in the lab to get the right handed swing going again. Feels good."

On transition to RF:

"Yeah, I feel great. You know, obviously, it's a transition from second base. moved me out there one of the first weeks of the fall, I had some competition up the middle, moved me out there and you know, I got comfortable and I feel good."

Last time he played OF:

"Probably freshman year of high school after I pitched."

FROM RYAN FREE:

On handling high leverage situations:

"Yeah, I mean, I like to think of it it's just like, you know, any other batter. You know, not let the situation get too big. So I try to keep my nerves down and, you know, like, try not to think about it and just trust my stuff."
