MANHATTAN, Kan. — Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield made his mark early in Saturday's 55-0 blowout of Kansas State.
He threw for 235 yards and five touchdowns in the first half and sent the Sooners' offense into cruise control after building a 35-0 lead.
After the game, while much of the talk was focused on the disappointing loss to Texas a week earlier or the annihilation of the Wildcats, Mayfield turned briefly toward the future.
“Got a good one coming up next,” Mayfield said with a sideways glance and a grin.
Mayfield, of course, knows who the Sooners are playing Saturday.
That would be Texas Tech, Mayfield's original college home, where he became the first true freshman walk-on quarterback to start his team's season opener.
Mayfield's relationship with Red Raiders coach Kliff Kingsbury soured and he soon transferred to Oklahoma, where he sat out a year and eventually earned a scholarship before winning the job just before the season.
