The DL was pretty disappointing and not only weren't the strength I thought they'd be but a liability. SHSU OL actually looked big compared to them which was quite concerning. I feel like this unit will play better but there was no pass rush, no push in the middle, but they did occupy blockers at times.
my number 1 concern before the season was linebacker and the first game really increased that fear. Awe is the only guy who even shows up on film. Jenkins had a couple plays but I was really disappointed in Williams and Mitchell. This just looks like a glaring hole of a position group and I don't know how we are going to fix it. Even with our missing starters, there is still no one to help this group.
The secondary was a real bright spot. We have pretty decent speed and ok size. They compete for the ball and actually tackle. Gaines is a baller and ward is very solid. they forced all of the turnovers and really helped seal the game.
The defense needs a lot of work. If they can put it together then maybe we have a shot at a decent season. It's just one game so hopefully they improve.
The offense was fantastic for the most part. Mahomes finally looks like the guy and will keep us in it. You really feel like we have a chance with him whereas with Webb and that defense, it just felt hopeless. Jakeem, Sadler, and Lauderdale are a special trio. Hope Cantrell makes it back because we are gonna need a big physical guy. I think Reg Davis is probably not going to realize his potential but hopefully he contributes. Washington looks good and hopefully Stockton gets back into the flow.
We all need to see the utep game but this team feels better than last year especially on offense but they will struggle mightily against the run and will need to continue to take the ball away to beat the better teams. Tech could have really blown them out in the second half but didn't however they did show some improvement from last year. I was thinking 7-5 with a chance at 8 but probably now hopefully we get 6 with a chance for 7 if the ball bounces our way. We have a great chance to improve this next game and there is no excuse for not winning by at least 21. Stop the run and score at will against that defense.
This team looks solid but flawed with some clear weaknesses. Our schedule is what makes the wins hard to come by but I am excited to watch us continue to improve.
