No order just my thoughts
At the end of the day, I am disappointed in the hype that the staff on this site, podcast and coaching staff had us drinking the koolaid. I hope this was a weird rain delay, night game and the luck of the cowboys thing but I think we just got exposed on national TV.
- This maybe one of the worst losses I have ever seen as a Tech fan. (I became one in 2007). From recent memory (20 years) this is the second worst loss since we dropped on in 2004 to New Mexico. Tech came out hot and then allowed an above average Wyoming team to come back and keep it close long enough to win it. Losing to Kansas was bad but they are a P5 team.
- Special teams outside of FG kicking was impressive. Austin was avg 50 a punt and Reese Burkhardt got touchbacks in every kickoff. That is something we should feel better about since both of them and their units played a perfect game.
- On the flip side Garcia struggled. The blocked FG was 100% on our linemen being pushed 5-6 yards in the backfield.
- There is no "The Man" on offense this year. We started 1/9 on 3rd downs and couldn't get any movement up front to run the ball. We avg less then 2.6 yards a rush (I took out the 5 rushes for 18 yards Shough had in OT) and 2.81 overall in the game.
- This was Tyler Shough's most TDs in a game since he threw for 4 against FIU. This was also just the 4th time in his career he has thrown for 3+ TDs (2020 against WSU and UCLA). On another interesting note, no QB on our roster has a 3+ TD game, even Morton only threw for 2 TDs against OSU and WVU.
- I texted my friend after we scored on the first OT, go for two. We were running the ball all over that D, but Kittley and McGuire went conservative and sometimes you need to gamble and when everything goes against you, you should trust your team to get 2 yards.
- Defense imho actually did ok. Forced two turnovers and kept Tech in the game. They had 56 plays ran against them before Tech scored to tied the game at 20. During that time Tech had 6 drives that were 4 plays or less. They kept us in the game but our offense didn't give them any breathing room.
- Tech had 2 sacks this game. Hutchings with 1 and banks/Low with the other. Linton was disappointing with pass and Cole was nonexistent. It made sense why we had to bring the house to try and pressure Peasley. We couldn't force it with our edge rushers.
- The defense had a lot of bone headed plays which kept Wyoming drives alive. the PF on Rayshad was weak but still can't touch a player going back to the huddle. The flag that took away Lux's INT also cost us in the back end.
- The weather delay and then playing a night game at that altitude I think also hurt the team.
- The biggest concern is this was the lack of leadership.
- From the coaching aspect we were not prepared. McGuire and Co talked about how great players were, how good of a team and came out like this. I am not sure if Kittley is the answer for our OC needs and after a year and a game I am not sure if he is, but he needs to do better ASAP. DeRuyter held Wyoming to 20 points in regulation, his defense was no where perfect but he did his job.
- From the players, I don't know who our captains are but they were not captains last night. Wyoming is a tough team but Tech was playing without leaders.
