I watched an informal pick up game again, this week. Two things stick out. First, Devon Thomas is going to be a significant addition. He has that extra gear. He is crazy quick with the ability to leave people standing. He is a pass first point guard and will be huge competition for Keenan (and C.J.). Speaking of C.J. I talked with one of his team mates who indicated that he is doing well, practicing at all three positions.
My guess is that Jordan could benefit from a red shirt this year. He needs to fill out and is faced with the reality of having Gotcher and DWill ahead of him. Not a slam on him, just the reality of having two seniors wanting those minutes.
I am very excited to see how Justin Gray does this year. He is very happy here and is doing well with his rehab. He is an impressive young man to say the least. He has no regrets about saying no to Harvard, Stanford and other Ivy league schools, given the quality of education he is getting here. He is workng on a double major, FYI. We saw enough early last year to see that he is a great looking true wing, just needs minutes and games under his belt, IMO.
I will also add that my second look at Matt Temple further reinforces my belief that, when eligible in December, he will earn minutes. He is 6'10" and around 250 lbs. I was told that he led many of the guards in agility sprints. He will surprise many who have no idea who he is or how he has gone unnoticed. Don't get me wrong, I'm only saying that he will help in defensive relief, but given the need for depth down low, this just might be very important as conference goes on.
The team is going to Canada in August to play a few games. This should be an excellent way to get the new academic year going and have a little pre season reality check up.
Again, I have zero clue of what any of this means when it comes to wins and losses....
