Will update this with the full quotes here in a bit, but here’s your Warren Washington update.
Full quote:
"Obviously went out of the game and there was a lot of concern and you know, I don't know if he'll play in the game or not on Saturday, but he's definitely turned in a positive direction. I mean, I had concerns like everybody was feeling like 'is this going to be significant' and we feel like this will be kind of a game time decision as to if he'll be ready to play or not but I do feel good about where he's headed, though."
On more specifically what's going on with WW & how Jennings could step up on Sat:
"Warren's got a little bit of a foot deal going on. But I mean, honestly, he's moving well. I was encouraged after the game. And I don't know the timetable on it, honestly, because we're just seeing how he responds on a day to day basis and taking a cautious approach with him. He's such an elite mover and that's a big part of his game. And obviously, we're going to need him down the stretch. In the case that he is unable to go, Rob has made this steady climb, and not just his ability to impact the game defensively, which I think he's made some improvements but as you saw the other night, he puts pressure on people because of his speed. And that's why getting stops is so important. So Rob can use his athleticism to get an open floor and his decision making continues to improve and we need Rob to be great even if Warren is healthy or not. And that was proven in the game against Kansas. But I love the way he's battling. I love the way he's competing. I love the way defensively he's using his physicality. You can see his confidence grow, and what what our game plans are and how he can put himself into the middle of it. And if we do play with him, I think getting him involved in offense and how we utilize his ability to use his athleticism on rolls to basket is going to be big."
Onto the ISU notes...
On ISU's ability to create turnovers from doubling the post:
"Well, we don't we don't throw it to the post a lot. Honestly, obviously, Darrion Williams got involved in some actions. In the Kansas game, you know, Warren catches it down there some, you know, really, I think it's about how to create the space around where they're most aggressive. You can't hold the ball against me and I think the one thing about playing against an Iowa State team is you have to be the aggressor on offense. If you want to have success. You got to find a way to puncture their defense quickly in the possession you don't want to do a lot of passing around on the perimeter even though you need to move the ball to be effective offensively, but, man, they're ball pressure, their physicality, and even their aggressiveness not just in the post but the way they put two people on the ball and your ball screen coverages. I mean, it really is impressive how well, they they squeeze you defensively but definitely a concern. would be if we do it down in there."
On heading into the atmosphere of Hilton:
"I mean one you don't take timeouts with you. So you got to use them. Two, just the connected nature of our team. How will you stay together when things aren't going great? And just how well you believe in the process of the plan that you have in place. That's real. That's not something that you can say, it's what you have to do. And really, the closeness of this group I think lends itself to given us a way to withstand the momentum that happens in the Hilton Coliseum, which is impressive."
On Momcilovic, their standout freshman wing:
"He shoots it good, I just actually talked to talk to Kerwin about this in practice like he shoots with the most confidence of anybody I've seen in our league. When and where, it doesn't matter, if he catches it and he can see the rim it just feels like that he puts pressure on it by the way he shoots it, man he's good off the bounce and should shoot pull ups and he's a crafty guy finding those crevices to get open. And doesn't think twice about shooting it. You better be there on the catch. And anytime you have that kind of floor spacer, you know, it'll manipulate your defense well, so he's going to be a key to this one to keep him from making random shots."
On the guards in Lipsey and Gilbert:
"They marry each other in some ways in the way they can get to the free throw line. They're such great drivers, but they're great scores too, and make open threes. They can put pressure on you by really attacking the basket. They're great. passers, I mean really, their attack mentality just reminds me, when they see a team struggle and they know how to take advantage of it. Not a lot of teams do with their aggressiveness and they can do it they can pass it they move it they played through their forwards, their forwards put pressure on the basket, they rotate well with the basketball and moving offensively. I think the best thing they do is put pressure on you and flip foul pressure on you by the way they drive the basketball. It's hard to keep them out of the paint. You got to do your best to do it and make them make contested shots."
On similarities between ISU and Houston:
"Definitely especially at home, I mean, they mirror Houston in a lot of ways, their size, their athleticism at their size and the way they can recover. I mean you can think you have an angle and they they go and wall up and make you score through a body that's above the rim and that's that's a lot for a defense to handle. And then, like we talked about earlier, their post defense and how aggressive they are at attacking the ball anytime it gets close to the paint, they're one of the best help defense teams in the country. They're both pressure, they're their activity with their hands. I mean, they've just, they really cause problems with their ball pressure, their ability to attack penetration, man, it's one of the few teams that you'll see that puts you on your heels when you have an advantage. It's hard to do and they're great at it."
