2:09p Sat update - So far so good. There’s been rain about 50 miles SE of Lubbock and 35 miles NE of Lubbock. All these showers are moving to the WNW. Chance for rain and storms continues through the afternoon, but hopefully we’ll keep barely dodging the rain. Also, thus far it’s been just rain, no lightning. But with heating of the afternoon some storms should develop.
2:35p Fri update - No change in the forecast. 40% chance for rain and thunderstorms through tomorrow in Lubbock. Kickoff near 76, high temp around 81, mostly cloudy. Wind E/SE 5-12mph.
Several of the latest computer model runs this afternoon have actually backed off slightly on rain potential...showing maybe it'll be some rain/storms late morning/early afternoon then be dry through game time. But this is common to see things shift back and forth a few days out. It's why your phone app will go from 70% rain chance to 20% rain chance then back to 50% chance...it's simply pulling straight from the computer models.
I still think it's a decent chance we don't get any rain tomorrow afternoon and evening. I'd be prepared for some rain and know that a lightning delay is possible. The humidity levels throughout the atmosphere will be well above what's typical for this time of year, so it doesn't take much to get showers to develop.
Thu update - Storm chance is now a little higher for Saturday afternoon, now 40% chance for a thunderstorm. High temp near 81. Like mentioned below, it all depends on how much humidity gets streamed up this way from the system in the Gulf. At this point it looks like we'll have good humidity for some heavy downpours. It isn't like what most locations south of I-20 have Saturday, around 80% chance for rain and storms down there. But still, a decent chance for rain and storms Saturday.
Wed afternoon - There's a chance for thunderstorms Saturday afternoon in Lubbock. Kickoff near 80, high near 83.
Big question right now is how far north a tropical disturbance over the Gulf will move. It's expected to become a tropical depression tomorrow as it moves NW toward the Texas coast. It's not going to be a major tropical system. But it will bring a lot of rain across Texas late this week into early next week. And it looks like on Saturday it'll send enough humidity north leading to about a 30% chance for rain and storms in Lubbock.
More updates to come as we get closer to game time.
