I touched base with Houston MacArthur linebacker Jacoby Simpson to follow up on the recent interest from the Texas Tech coaches.
Simpson mentioned the coaches want to pick up where they left off in January, after the holidays.
"Yes sir, I spoke with the Texas Tech coaches again," Simpson said. "Coach Gibbs and Coach Spavital had stopped by the school recently. They have the bowl game this week and want to come back down for an in-home visit next month, then we will talk about scheduling an official visit to Lubbock.
"The coaches want to continue building a relationship. They were honest though, Coach Spavital mentioned there would probably not be immediate playing time at inside linebacker, but that I would have plenty of opportunity to play a lot my sophomore year. I'm not concerned with playing time or my role on the defense, I'm just looking for the best fit for me."
The 6-foot-1, 220-pound prospect took an official visit to Kansas State this month and there are a handful of other programs involved at the moment.
"Reopening my recruitment and starting the process over is a lot," Simpson said. "I'm just taking my time and seeing which coaches and which opportunity stands out. There isn't a lot of time though, that is the crazy part. I already visited Kansas State and had taken an official to Arizona State earlier this season, so I have three visits left.
"I don't have any specific visits scheduled, but I'm hearing from Texas Tech, Nebraska and Texas A&M right now. Most of the communication is the same, coaches stopped by recently and want to reconnect during the next open contact period in January."
Currently rated a 5.7 three-star prospect, Simpson is the No. 18 overall inside linebacker prospect in the nation and the No. 57 overall prospect on the Rivals Texas Top 100 for the 2018 class.
Our take: The coaches will follow up, meet with Simpson and schedule an official visit. Now it sounds like the relationship and timing of everything is more important than anything. Does he visit A&M first and shut things down after an offer? We will stay in touch with Simpson to provide the latest.
