Against UTEP, Sam Ehlinger had a record-setting first half, with 424 passing yards and five passing touchdowns to leading to a 59-3 win in ATX Saturday night.
The Longhorns scored touchdowns on five of their first six possessions and added a field goal on their seventh.
Key takeaways
I believe our offense has more firepower than UTEP. We were very limited in play-calling last week, and I expect we try to stretch the field a bit more next week. I hope to see some fifty/fifty balls to Vasher vs the six-foot-tall Thompson. That said, I worry about Bowmans' ability to connect with our deep threats downfield, especially against a much better secondary. I would love to see us use the mythical Tight End position to our advantage; Koontz looks like a man amongst boys out there. If we can get the outs and crossing routes going to the big body targets early, we have a better chance at catching them in single coverage on the outside for a quick score.
I expect UT to come out swinging and look to push the ball down the field to a host of receivers. Last week we struggled to get home rushing three against a subpar O line. I chalk that up to week one and not wanting to show a lot of our defensive scheme, but we must get to Ehlinger if we're going to slow them down. I still expect us to be in base with three deep most of the time. I would love to see a linebacker spy on Ehlinger, preferably coming across the scrimmage line more often than not.
Rushing attacks on both sides are questionable going into next week, due to the level of talent they faced in week one. I expect UT will rush for 200+ yards against us, running simple zone schemes. I think they will push our front four around pretty well. We need Riko to have an excellent game to slow them down. SaRodorick has to come out to a quick start if we want to have a chance. I like us to run inside zone to the week side and get Thomas in some space with blocking downfield. The screen game could be a huge extension of our run game also, as UT has some speed in their pass rush, we may be able to use that against them.
The lines are not out yet, but I expect us to be at least a 10 point dog at home. In recent history, there has been value in Tech at home as double-digit dogs, but we had Pat in those games.

- Sam Ehlinger 78-yard TD pass to Joshua Moore on the opening play from scrimmage
- Ten different receivers caught passes.
- Texas totaled 689 yards of offense with *481 yards through the air (*single-game school record).
- Joseph Ossai led UT with eight tackles, the 10th time he has registered at least eight stops as a Longhorn.
- Under new coordinator Mike Yurcich, they seem to be moving at a higher tempo than Texas has in recent years.
- Wide receiver was a significant question for UT entering the season; Joshua Moore appears to be the answer.
- Texas only gave up three points, UTEP's offense only produced 233 yards.
- Josh Thompson, emerging as their top cornerback.
