Kliff Kingsbury and Mike Smith were featured on this week's 'Red Raider Football with Kliff Kingsbury' radio show. Notes and quotes from the hour-long program are below.
- Kingsbury on last week: "They're a very good football team. You have four turnovers on the road against a team like that, it's not going to go well for you. [...] Just couldn't do what we needed to do to make it a real ballgame in the end."
- "(Pat Mahomes') been good. Looking back on the game film, we watched it, I think three of those got tipped or batted up into the air. Reads were fine."
- Kingsbury on DeAndre Washington: "The holes weren't always there the other night, but he broke a lot of tackles."
- "We've got to find more ways to get (Justin Stockton) touches."
- Kingsbury said that he was surprised that Ian Sadler's catch/non-catch on Texas Tech's first drive against Oklahoma wasn't reviewed or called a fumble.
- Kingsbury said the team needs more consistency out of Devin Lauderdale and Reg Davis.
- Kingsbury said the team usually breaks down film of five games for each opponent -- four games from the current season, and Texas Tech's game against the team the previous season.
- Kingsbury said his favorite Halloween candy is candy corn.
- "I'm not a clown (costume) guy."
- "The most success I've had (with a Halloween costume) was Justin Bieber. I had longer hair then. That played well."
- Kingsbury acknowledged that he has to hold a postgame press conference. "I wish we could pick and choose on that deal. That'd be a lot more fun for me. That's a brutal walk."
- "I hope we get a bye week (in 2016)."
- Kingsbury, when asked if he can do the two-step, said that he could since he spent "many a summer" trying to "romance a tourist" at Gruene Hall in New Braunfels.
- Kingsbury said that Ian Sadler is "getting back to full speed." Jonathan Giles is "coming along."
- "Dylan Cantrell is redshirting this year. [...] It was tough, but he's a great young man."
- Kingsbury said he's been very impressed with Donta Thompson so far.
- "Jones Stadium is a special place but, as a program, we've got to find a way to take (good play) on the road."
- "I think J.W. Walsh is such a dynamic player, dynamic competitor, always has been. I think he's someone that that team believes in and follows. [...] You can see that he has that magic in that (redzone) area. [...] He's a unique player, there's no doubt."
- "They're giving away some serious prizes this year for the costumes."
- Kingsbury said that the team will be wearing all black Saturday against Oklahoma State.
- Kingsbury on Baylen Brown: "He's moved around some (this week). He'll be a gametime decision."
- Mike Smith: "Just being home at Tech, Halloween night, going to be blacked out, it's going to be an exciting atmosphere. [...] I truly believe we have the best fans in the country."
- Smith said that Ondre Pipkins and Kolin Hill are "doing great."
- Smith said that Hill reminds him of Breiden Fehoko in that he "wants to be great" and football means a lot to him.
- "I've challenged (Pipkins) to lose weight. He's on a mission. [...] He has a different look in his eye. He's already got the defense down."
- Smith said that Lonzell Gilmore has missed practice time due to a shoulder injury. He had surgery in August. Gilmore could end up being a big defensive end, per Smith, despite being recruited to play rush end.
- Smith said that Broderick Washington is "one of the toughest" players in the defensive line room.
- Smith said that keeping track of what quarterback is in the game for Oklahoma State has been one of the biggest points of emphasis on defense this season. "It's a big deal."
- Smith on the message to the defense this week: "We've got four games left. In 90 years, Tech has only had 13 nine-win seasons. You can still make it a positive. You can still leave a legacy when you leave here."
- "I love Halloween. I love the atmosphere. I think it's fun."
- "When you play great teams like this, you have to start fast. It's obviously very important."
