Job Description for: RF System Engineer

Personality: L&W hires for attitude. The individual must be a motivated self-starter, capable of
working as a team player, in a small business environment where the emphasis is on "getting the
job done". Must be able to "think out of the box" and challenge conventional thinking in system
design. Must be willing to collaborate and mentor less experienced engineers.
Travel: The candidate must be willing and able to travel as needed to support client needs.
Generally 25%.
Experience: Must have 3 years experience in the detailed design, planning, implementation or
deployment of private wireless narrowband and broad band systems, with an emphasis on twoway
radio systems used by electric utilities, oil and gas companies, railroads, or public safety
organizations. Experience with commercial wireless carriers deploying voice and data networks
will be considered. Microwave radio experience a plus.
Education and Training: Must hold either a Bachelor of Science in Engineering or Bachelor of
Science in Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited university. P.E. stamp highly
desired but not required.
The ideal candidate will:
• Have experience with detailed mobile radio system planning, design, and implementation
• Understand trunked and conventional radio system fundamentals in all bands
• Be familiar with both analog and digital two way radio systems
• Be familiar with Motorola, Harris (formerly M/A Com, Ericson, GE Mobile Radio), Tait,
Kenwood and other manufacturer systems including features, benefits and capabilities of
each
• Understand RF propagation modeling, coverage planning, and how to use current
coverage planning software. Experience with EDX and/or Mentum Planet a plus
• Have experience with field coverage testing and verification
• Have experience with dispatch console systems and how they integrate into, and operate
with, complex mobile radio networks
• Be familiar with the FCC Part 90 rules and regulations
• Understand mobile data applications and use/deployment of new and innovative
broadband wireless systems and techniques (WiFi, WiMax, LTE) to support mobile data
applications
• Understand antenna systems including the use of combiners, multi-couplers and
sophisticated distributed antenna systems and solutions
• Be willing to work with the L&W sales team to support the development of proposals for
future sales
• Be willing to spend time in the field to accomplish the goals of our clients
Location: This position can be run from a virtual office, but requires at least a bimonthly
presence in Lockard and White's corporate headquarters in Bryan, Texas. Situated in the
Research Valley of Texas (www.researchvalley.org), L&W's offices are just minutes from the
regional airport (CLL) and from the campus of Texas A&M University.

organizations. Experience with commercial wireless carriers deploying voice and data networks
will be considered.
Education: Must hold a Bachelor of Science in a technical discipline from an ABET accredited
university. An engineering degree and a network certification, such as CCNA or CCNP, is
desired.
The ideal candidate will:
• Be able to design, implement, and troubleshoot routed and switched networks.
• Understand the design constraints and capabilities of data link and network protocols,
such as Ethernet, SONET, ATM, TCP/IP, OSPF, BGP, MPLS, etc.
• Have experience with detailed mobile radio system planning, design, and implementation
• Understand trunked radio system fundamentals in all bands
• Be familiar with Motorola, Harris (formerly M/A Com, Ericson, GE Mobile Radio), Tait,
Kenwood, Cisco, Juniper Networks, Extreme Networks, Foundry, Nortel, and other
manufacturer systems including features, benefits and capabilities of each
• Understand RF propagation modeling, coverage planning, and how to use current
coverage planning software. Experience with EDX and/or Mentum Planet a plus
• Have experience with field coverage testing and verification
• Be familiar with both analog and digital two way radio systems
• Have experience with dispatch console systems and how they integrate in to, and

• Be familiar with the FCC Part 90 rules and regulations
