Before the naysayers roast me, take an objective look at several facts
  • Outside of 2016, Dykes improved his team’s every single year
  • He has a broader connection to coaches and coordinators than most of the names mentioned
  • He’s always been a great recruiter
  • He is VERY respected in the high school and college coaching community
  • The admin and boosters at Cal were awful. They hamstrung him in two huge ways.....assistant salaries and who he could recruit. Recruits had to meet Cal standards AND maintain high GPAs. Not even Stanford has standards even close.
  • Even though he wasn’t a cultural fit, he still picked up the pieces and got better every year
  • He knows the landscape of Texas, just not Texas Tech
  • He has successfully killed it at one DI school, and turned around a dumpster fire at a P5 school.
  • He knows how to run every part of a P5 school and has coached under some incredible coaches.
I also believe that Dykes would bring in GREAT coordinators and assistants. I believe we’d keep Jones at Oline....but I also could see us pulling Cumbie from TCU. He also has close ties with Ruffin, or any other number of great defensive coaches. He knows that assistant pay is top priority and would take less to get more.

Last, he is fiery as hell. He is not anything like what we currently have and has the ability to coach, disciple, motivate and win.

I know some will say hell no, but I think if you take a step back, this isn’t just safe, it’s pretty solid.
