To start I think it needs to be said, we completely dominated Houston outside of turnover and the score(and those two tied together in this case).
How to win a game:
Hold opposing team under 300 passing✅
Hold opposing team under 100 rushing ✅
Pass for over 300✅
Rush for over 100✅
Winning TOP: almost tripled Houston’s TOP✅
First down: 35 to 15(Their defense is probably still winded from the TOP difference)✅
These next two were calling cards of the past decade of Tech football:
Don’t allow one star player to beat you: Nathaniel Dell- 0 pts ✅
Win the penalty battle: 6(44) vs 11(121)✅
It feels like we’ve always been the team with 11 for 121. Instantly fixed with JM.
When was the last time we could even claim 2 of those in the game against an opponent with a pulse?
Obvious room to improve and the only reason the score was close:
Turnovers: 3 turnover to their 2
Defensive points: on the giving end of this stat this week❌
Special teams: missing field goals and a near miss on a punt return TD, lots to improve. ❌❌❌
Overall here’s the big takeaway. We have a coach that actually knows how to win football games, not just produce stats. JM had a plan going into the game and it showed. I don’t think a soul on this board didn’t start having old thought of another Tech collapse and what could’ve been, but Joey and co continued to execute their plan and won the game despite Houston going ahead with 37 seconds left in the game, facing a 4th and 20, losing the turnover battle and giving the other team points.
Looking back it was pretty damn beautiful when you take all into account and don’t have to live through it live.
You can truly feel the culture shift and having a competent coaching staff. Can’t wait to see what these guys do with the remainder of this season and moving forward.
I’m upping my prediction to 9 wins(one of which being a bowl win)
