25% tax on semi-autos and handguns to support victims of gun violence? It's a good idea to support victims of gun violence but the money raised with a tax like this would far exceed the cost victims need. Also this just further pushes the responsibility of bad gun ownership onto law abiding gun owners. Should proper background checks be the responsibility of the government? I'm all for proper gun regulation but I don't trust one person in Washington to implement a proper system that makes us safer.
Also to call 33,000 deaths among a population over 300 million an epidemic just goes to show you how far removed from reality we've become. That's less than .01% of the population, irresponsible driving (drinking/texting and driving) kills far more people than that yet it's not a political issue. We'll argue about where .2333% of the population should use the bathroom...... Can we just focus on the issues? And when did we become anti-utilitarian in our politics?
