Watched their game against Toledo in its entirety and here are the facts about the pigs....
Most important:
1. While they were more balanced in their play calling, this was not just an issue of them abandoning the run.
Fact is. Toledo beat Arkansas's vaunted o line and best them badly
If Arkansas could have dominated that game up front they could have won that game. They could not, Toledo stuffed them on 1st and 2nd and goal and Arkansas barely generated yardage on 1st down runs that weren't misdirection.
The holding calls, were a sign of how much arkansas OL struggled with Toledo front 7.
On their 2 4th and shorts arkansas got stuffed on one and barely got the other.
I don't know if our defense is as diciplined as Toledo, but Arkansas had to throw in that game.
That being said Toledo generated little pass rush, except in the fourth q when they started twisting a little. Speaks maybe to the athletes of Toledo, idk.
2. Arkansas dominated Toledo's o line in the first half, which kept them in the game. But they were nonexistent in the second.
Take of two halfs doesn't tell the story. Toledo's o line struggled to keep their qb upright against 4 man rush in 1st half, and couldn't run the ball.
I don't know if Arkansas d line tired or shat, but they stopped getting pressure. And Toledo was picking up rushing yards In Chunks.
Needless to say if our o line is anything like we think. And we should be much better than Toledo, this should be an eye opener for Arkansas to see our o line and te weapons they work with.
Miscellaneous notes:
1. Toledo qb (Alabama transfer) was solid, but was strictly a pocket passer . Never ran or extended plays. This is going to be very different beast for Arkansas this week.
2. Arkansas is not exotic on d. They played a lot of 2 high zone or cover 1 man (not one snap of press man) with a four man rush. I think we eat this alive. And IMO they dot have the players to blitz a lot. Their answer may be to drop more in coverage, but with mahomes ability to run and extend plays even this won't be a good answer.
3. Yes mistakes played a factor in this game, Arkansas snapped puny over punter head, and had a clear holding call in a bad punt by Toledo punter.
But they took some as well, blocked a chip shot field goal, and a holding call in redzone.
The cheap stuff evened out. Bottom line this game was lost in the trenches.
What I think will happen having watched both teams:
I don't want to here any p*ssy bullsh*t about how "mad" Arkansas is going to be.
Our guys should be fired up so mental edge should not be a factor unless the prime time road game is too much pressure for pat and a veteran minded team wanting payback. Do you think that will be the case? I think not. So here is what the game boils down to.
Is our d more talented than Toledo's? Yes.
Are they as disciplined or as physical? Tough one but right now I lean toward no.
Key is Arkansas is not a dominant team, far from it. They will be one of the weaker teams we play this year.
Worse than tcu, Baylor, ou, wvu, and probably ok state.
With consistent qb play we make a game of it last year.
This year without their best RB, an o line that is just fat. And and a d line that should tired out against Toledo. I like our chances.
If we turn the ball over and come out flat Arkansas has a chance.
If we get a few stops and a turnover or two.
And our O performs like they can.
This can be a blowout for the good guys.
Guns up boys, I am really excited to see us play on a national stage this weekend and officially get that nasty taste from last year out of our mouths.
