Have gotten so many great travel tips and pieces of advice on places to visit from RRS in the past, so I'm going back to the well one more time for help with the family vacay for this summer. I'm thinking about someplace up in the mountains in Colorado, but not exactly sure of the best place or what may be available now (my daughter has some summer classes and is done July 5th, so thinking that weekend of 6th/7th to drive up there and spend the whole week).

I have a few things in mind I'm interested in doing - one is renting a jeep and doing the Alpine Loop between Lake City and Ouray (never been to Lake City, so no idea what to expect there in terms of VRBO's or cabins or stuff to do, been to Ouray before and it's awesome but want to branch out a little bit and maybe find something new to experience). I'm also interested in the Black Canyon of the Gunnison but have never seen it so not sure what to expect, but hoping there's some white water rafting or something we could do there.

I was offhandedly thinking about Crested Butte or Leadville to stay in, but it seems like a trek to go all the way from those places to Black Canyon of the Gunnison and the Alpine Loop, never spent time in either but interested in those spots. Have skied in Breckenridge last couple of years, so that's not too far from there, but just looking for feedback from others who have been there/done that. Open to other ideas about where to stay or go, but those are kind of the starting points I'm thinking about for our trip.

F/w/i/w, traveling party would consist of me, wife, and two daughters (high school and college). On their own they would never do white water rafing or rent a jeep and go off-roading, but they usually go along with the shenanigans that I cook up.

I've gotten great recs from folks on here before, like doing Olympic National Park, off-roading on the Bachelor Loop outside of Creede to go visit old abandoned mines, and probably some others that I'm forgetting about, so thanks in advance for any help this group can offer.
