Read an article about what we might face real soon. With 25 million hitting the streets, and companies cutting whatever costs they can to simply survive, it's logical to think we'll have millions losing coverage. Many lose their insurance along with their jobs. They'll struggle to make ends meet much less paying for COBRA. People in states who expanded Medicaid will have a better chance to get something affordable than those states that didn't buy in. With most states already facing big deficits, expanding Medicaid now isn't practical.. and that's "if" expansion remains an option for any states if OBamacare is gone. An estimate of 15 million losing coverage is certainly possible. Many companies will force employees to pay more or eliminate company plans all together. Higher premiums lead to fewer plans, leads to hospital bill increases, leads to higher premiums, and on...
The perfect storm is if the Supreme Court rules OBamacare illegal at the same time, thus putting another 25 million in the market for new insurance. Trump reiterated his plans to eliminate OBamacare this week. If the court rules it's illegal, is it possible that Congress and the president could agree on a new plan in a couple of months during campaigns? Dream on! If they don't come up with something, our entire health care system will be under incredible stress. If the government does nothing, there will be a flood of new companies selling skinny plans filled with exclusions limiting coverages. Won't even get in to the financial stability and reserves of those companies. There will be a feeding frenzy over the healthiest segments of the population. If you're between 50 and 65, you're screwed. And despite all the rhetoric about plans covering preexisting conditions, I wouldn't bet my life savings on it.
By October the country will have developed a plan for moving on from the virus. Thus making any actions on health insurance plans the biggest issue for the elections. We'll see proposals from Medicare for all to no government involvement at all, and everything in between. As many as 30-35 million could base their vote on their health care situations. The short term issue of the virus/economy shouldn't have a bearing on the court decision. If it ends OBamacare and Medicaid expansion too, it will be a crisis that is impossible for Congress to settle before November. Voters may decide it at the polls. I won't make a personal opinion at this time. Just wondering how people see this playing out if OBamacare is outlawed.
