I took the family to the game yesterday, and naturally we were running a little behind. I had enjoyed my Friday night a little too much so my wife drove my truck while the kids and I slept. GPS had us arriving to the stadium around 10:45 AM.
For the last two(ish) years we have parked in a tiny parking lot next to that DK gas station located across from the East side of Jones ATT stadium. There has usually been someone collecting money but not yesterday. I bragged to my wife that we were parking for free baby! She noticed a sign talking about The Overton parking and even mentioned us needing to move but we were already late so my dumb a$$ told her not to worry about it, and that we would be fine!
Fast forward a few hours and we are leaving the stadium. I was proud of myself for not racking up a tab in the club - even if it was only because I was too hungover from the night before. Free parking, no bar tab, AND we didn’t have time to stop at Red Raider Outfitter or anywhere else to shop before the game. Savings galore baby!
We all know where I am going with this. We drag the two under two kiddos around the stadium. Get a picture with Adam Hill. Meet the brother in law and his family. Take pictures with them and then head back to our truck. Red Raider Towing got my a$$. They kindly relocated my truck for me and charged me $342 to do it.
Here’s where it gets interesting…
As i’m standing in this maximum security holding tank, in walks Nick Fattig still in his Texas Tech pre and post game gear. He said he had been parking there for 2 years also and just got towed for the first time as well! I can’t get enough of Texas Tech football so I start asking him all kinds of questions.
He told me he thinks he has a really good chance to start at right guard for the bowl game and for next year. He believes we have at least 3 offensive linemen already planning to transfer - the starting right guard, and two left tackles. He mentioned our 3rd and 4th string QBs were probably both gone (He is roommates with Jake Strong) and Jake is the one who gave him a ride to the wrecker. Jake and Cam Brown would both be gone which I think we all kind of expected.
So I started asking about Will Hammond. His responses surprised me. He mentioned Behren may not play in the bowl game due to his shoulder injury. He said everyone is still weighing their options, but it looks like the surgery Behren put off last year really needs to be done. I asked about Will in practice, and if he thought Will was ready to go. I am paraphrasing to the best of my ability but he said something along the lines of “I have never met or seen anyone like Will Hammond. He is way different. He is probably already back in the film room trying to get better. He is in there until 10 PM every night studying film. He makes throws in practice that no other Quarterbacks are making” He did mention that part of that reason might be because or Behren’s hurt shoulder which has obviously been a lot worse than anyone has led on. Chris Level is about the only person i’ve heard mention it, and even he couldn’t say for certain what Behren was dealing with.
I thought his words were very telling. Behren is tough as hell and the ultimate competitor, but it sounds like Will Hammond is killing it in practice, the weight and film rooms, and obviously on game day as well when he gets his opportunities!
Last thing and my novel is finally finished. Nick mentioned something I thought was interesting when talking about bowl games. He said that somebody inside Tech’s program mentioned there was a chance we drew Alabama had Auburn beat them yesterday. I’m not sure if that was just hearsay or what but thought that would be a wild match up for the Red Raiders. He also said he believed several starters would opt out of the bowl game this year to get healthy or transfer out which I guess is the new norm these days.
