I found this story somewhere attached to a news article, I believe. This story is not meant upset anyone. It's not related to any current news story. I think it is appropriate going into the Thanksgiving and Christmas season.

"My favourite uncle was a German POW who was taken prisoner by Americans. One of the reasons that he was treated well was that the Americans he surrendered to clearly felt sorry for him. He was 18, terrified and starving. One of the Americans actually gave him chocolate.

Although he was happy to be out of the war, he was very upset at the food he was given. He had never had white bread when he was growing up - he told me he saw it as a luxury. The Americans gave him food and a small loaf of white bread on his first day in a camp. He ate a bit of the bread and hoarded the rest. The next day, he was given another loaf of bread. This confused him. On the third day when they gave him yet another loaf of bread with his meal he cried as he realised Germany was defeated, since the Americans had so much food they could feed their POW’s better than Germany could feed her soldiers.

The fact that America didn’t have a food shortage probably helped them treat their prisoners well.

All his life my uncle liked America and Americans."
