As Texas Tech left guard Alfredo Morales looked down the offensive line at the start of the Red Raiders season opener against Sam Houston State, he saw his brother Tony setting up at right guard for the first time in a college game.

The Morales twins headed to Texas Tech from Arlington Sam Houston as highly touted recruits. Alfredo has worked his way to becoming a senior leader and seasoned starter on the offensive line. Tony, however, had missed four straight seasons because to shoulder and knee injuries.

“Getting to go out there with my brother was a blessing,” said Alfredo, who has started 26 games for the Red Raiders. “It meant the world to me to get to play with him again. It’s been hard to watch him miss so many games and have to work so hard to come back from injures. But it’s going to work out. He’s stronger because of it. ”

Tony’s presence on the field in a 59-45 win against Sam Houston State and again the next week in a 69-20 win against UTEP is a testament to his dedication.

“Not many people get a chance to play college football, so I wanted to work hard and not waste my opportunity,” Tony said. “It’s tough to be out the whole year rehabbing one thing and then come back and be right back out rehabbing something else back-to-back-to-back-to-back. It was frustrating, but at the same time I had to be supportive of my brother, my teammates. I was a little nervous for my first college game. My last game was all the way back in 2010 at Sam Houston.”

Through his many rehabilitation programs, Tony never lost his dream of playing college football.
“Watching [Alfredo] work hard to get into the starting lineup made me work hard to get back on the field,” said Tony, who has another year of eligibility and plans to become an offensive line coach in the future. “We do everything together. We even share a car. So having someone so close helped me through everything.”

So far this season, Texas Tech is averaging 399 passing yards, 191.3 rushing yards, and 54.3 points a game. The Red Raiders are already a victory away from equaling last season’s win total and halfway to becoming bowl eligible.

“Being able to run the ball helps open up the passing game too,” said Alfredo, who hopes to get a chance to play in the NFL. “When you have to respect our rushing game, that allows some of our receivers to get one-on-one matchups.”
