Tough one. Red Raiders drop a tight one against Texas A&M on a neutral court. Obviously, Tech’s without their best player, and honestly, it showed, and it all equaled a loss in Fort Worth to the Aggies.
Some thoughts…
Chance & Overton with another strong day: Overton was really the only Red Raider who was able to score in the early stages of this one. He helped Tech climb out of what became a pretty deep hole in the early stages of the game. Big for him and he continues to be really strong for this team in December. McMillian also had a strong outing, posting his second game in a row with 20-or-more points.
Fede & EY step up: This pair seemed to play pretty well. Federiko likely had his best day on the defensive end and made contributions on the offensive end. Yalaho continues to need some time to get his legs under him, but was able to help spell Federiko and contribute in his minutes.
Aggie length & boards give Tech trouble: Those above two weren’t able to do enough on the boards in this one. It was expected based on Texas A&M’s body of work coming into this one, but it bit the Red Raiders, especially down the stretch.
Scoring droughts abundant for Tech: Tech was unable to find consistent offensive answers throughout, going into multiple multi-minute scoring droughts and the final one proved to be costly. Tech couldn’t find a bucket after answering an 11-0 Aggie run near the U4 as A&M was moving in and out of a zone, and Wade Taylor’s strong execution in crunch time won the game for A&M.
Tough, tough loss for multiple reasons: Obviously it was going to be a big ask for the Red Raiders to take down the physical and lengthy Aggies without JT Toppin, but the matter that Tech lost made it a bit more frustrating. Tech was hot and cold offensively, largely because of a tough day from Elijah Hawkins and Darrion Williams, but were unable to do enough to find a win. Tech’s already weak non-conference schedule has taken a couple of hits with the loss to Saint Joe’s and now this one to Texas A&M. Red Raiders have to get healthy, and in a hurry, as Big 12 play continues to loom closer.
