Found a way. Frustrating that Tech couldn’t pull away but defensive and fouling concerns brought that on. Was impressed that Tech found a way to score a bit without a very efficient JT Toppin and it’s another one in the win column. Some quick thoughts…
Overall a sub-par showing but a win is a win: Another ugly first half from the Red Raiders and another lackluster night defensively. Tech is really struggling to consistently guard the ball, and it’s pretty disappointing since it has to improve moving forward, creating issues throughout defensively.
D5 with a strong showing: Strong night from Darrion Williams. Would like to see him get downhill more but overall it was a much more efficient night and 20 points. Tech really needed this version to show up last night, but D5 gave Tech the lift necessary to find a win tonight.
Toppin not great from the field but adds double digits: Pretty ugly line from JT but a good night since he was the only Red Raider to consistently get to the foul line. That’s something that Tech must find a way to continue to get better at, forcing the issue offensively and being physical. I really would like to see Tech get downhill and I personally believe that Anderson provides a bit more of that compared to Hawkins, but that’s another conversation. Hopefully this version of Toppin isn’t the norm since he was not finding success with the hook, but it’s also the second night of a back-to-back.
McMillian in foul trouble bites Tech: Thought McMillian played a good game but had to manage four fouls for a significant portion of the game. Needless to say that Tech overall needs to be better defensively to find ways to guard without fouling, but I thought it hurt Tech more for McMillian.
Concerns still apparent leaving NYC: Great not to leave having gone 0-2, however, not a great weekend up there in Brooklyn. Obviously will have to be better moving forward but we’ll see what we get. Long way to go in the season and a couple of buy games before having to take on Texas A&M in Ft. Worth, but there’s a lot of work to be done over the next month.
