Football season, it’s getting closer. Fall camp number two under head coach Joey McGuire is just a few days away and as we head towards a season filled with as much optimism as this one is, I wanted to run down some things that I will be taking note of during practice.
Jacob Rodriguez & how he looks after injury
This one is fairly obvious; he is the leader of the linebacking corps and in all likelihood your starting MIKE linebacker.
Rodriguez missed the spring with an injury, and it will be very important to see how he looks after flashing all that promise last season behind Krishon Merriweather.
Depth in the linebacking corps
Behind Rodriguez and Jesiah Pierre, I want to see how Ben Roberts is developing along with getting a look at the young blood in Miquel Dingle and Ty Kana, two of the most promising young linebackers in that room.
You’re somewhat thin to begin with there, so some depth developing would be extremely helpful.
The additions of Brayln Lux and AJ McCarty to the secondary
These two additions, although we’re still waiting on official word on McCarty’s availability to this team, have shifted the dynamic in the secondary for the Red Raiders.
In the spring, you were missing that middle ground in between your starters and the incoming freshman which made for an interesting dynamic and put a lot of pressure on Brendan Jordan, Jordan Sanford, Chapman Lewis and other young defensive backs on the roster.
It will be interesting to see how the DB room looks with the additions of Lux and McCarty, since both have had quite a few snaps at their respective schools.
Tech’s Receiving Corps
I am curious to see how this shakes out since we didn’t get to see a ton of Drae McCray as he was getting his feet wet in the spring and wasn’t all that impressive to the naked eye, however the speed is there and they had him doing some stuff he hadn’t done before, so I want to see how he’s improved.
Outside of McCray, it will be important to see some depth like Coy Eakin and JJ Sparkman outside of your usual suspects like Jerand Bradley and Loic Fouonji.
Offensive Line & it’s depth
You pretty much have a good idea of what the starting five will look like come September 2nd in Laramie, but I think it will be important to see some of the options behind those five.
Jacoby Jackson, who started a few games last year, is likely your first to fill in at guard while I am interested in getting another look at Matt Keeler and Ty Buchanan, who are likely your backup tackles at this point.
HM: Will Burns, quarterback
This one is fun for me, personally. After watching him play shortstop for the baseball team at times this season, I am excited to see the arm on a football field where he was really, really good in high school in California.
