What is the value to about 4,250 linear feet (by 20' in width) of damage to a rye crop (today) in Central Texas? Farmer intends to let his 200-300 head of sheep graze on the rye and then disc it after temps rise above 90 degrees and plant a summer crop?
The area in question totals to about 85,000 sq ft or about 1.89 acres. I project about one 50lb bag of rye grass seed, which costs about $35 according to a local farm store. That part I have trouble valuing is his time to disc and spread. Any advise??
The impact is extremely minimal, because (a) we did a great job cleaning up, (b) rye grass will die when the temps hit 90 degrees and he has no plans for this crop other than grazing his sheep, and (c) he has another 150+ acres of rye crop for his sheep to graze -- more than enough. Once the grass dies, he told me he will plant a summer crop. However to keep relations good I told him I would pay him.
