our technology to not only discover these planets at unimaginalbe distances is not only growing but our ability to discover water and gases of their atmospheres. I know the Catholic Church has been planning for the time where we do find life outside this universe (Something along the lines that the Jewish war god would have sent his half human son to at least visit there) I am not aware of any of the protestants planning to explain and re assure their followers when the news breaks one day.
I think discovery of off Earth life will shake the Religious myths.
Even if we do discover life the distances are so vast I am not sure what the discovery will have other than the realization that life will be part of the universe and not special at all....
However, our lives changed when we discovered how to manipulate electromagnetic energy and I assume one day we will discover how to with gravity. That discovery might change us in the same ways that the electromagnetic spectrum has.
