LUBBOCK, Texas --
Texas Tech volleyball picked up its 10th win of the season after a 3-1 victory over Portland State in game one of the Lone Star Showdown on Friday, Sept. 18, at the United Supermarkets Arena.

The Red Raiders dropped the first set in a tight battle, 23-25, but responded with three-straight set wins at 25-16, 25-17 and 25-20.

For the third-straight match, junior Lauren Douglass posted the team-high in kills, notching a career-high of 20 on an attack percentage of .500. She’s recorded 16 kills or more during the three-game stretch, for a season total of 129.

Junior Marguerite Grubb stuffed the stat sheet on Friday, tallying her fourth double-double of the season thanks to 44 assists and 10 digs. She also picked up six kills, four service aces and a block. It was the sixth match this season and third consecutive that she’s had 40 or more assists.

In the first set, the Red Raiders posted 18 kills, with Douglass leading the way with six. Tech had 18 digs in the first frame, sophomore Audrey Fragniere putting up five. Senior Carlie Foust and freshman Reyn Akiu each had four digs in the first set. Tech and the Vikings were tied at 15 before Portland State took the lead and held on for a 25-23 set one win.

The Vikings jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in set two, but it would be the only time they would lead over the next two sets. The Red Raiders put up 13 kills in the second set and 14 in set three, with Douglass accounting for nine over that stretch, reaching 15 through three frames. Grubb assisted on 22 of Tech’s 27 kills in the middle sets, as Tech picked up wins of 25-16 and 25-17 in sets two and three, respectively.

The Red Raiders put together hitting percentages of over .300 in each of the first three sets, with marks of .308, .303 and .355.

Set four began and ended the same way as the second frame, with the Vikings jumping out to an early 2-0 advantage. However, it would once again be the only lead Portland State would have the rest of the match. Douglass racked up five more kills, giving her a career-high and the most for the Red Raiders in a single match this season at 20. Tech’s 12 kills in the final frame helped put away the Vikings, 25-20.

Tech’s 57 kills tied the second-most in a match this season, with the other coming at home against Houston on Aug. 29.

Senior Brianna Grant posted a season-high eight blocks, while sophomore Victoria Hinneburg had five blocks to go along with her eight kills.

Four Red Raiders totaled double-digit digs: Reyn Akiu (14), Carlie Foust (13), Ashley Morgan (11) and Grubb (10).

Tech returns to the court on Friday night in part two of the doubleheader against Washington State at 7 p.m. at the United Supermarkets Arena.
