Maybe I just wasn’t paying close enough attention to previous staffs, but Coach Wells frequently discusses the odds of a play being successful from different points in the field, statistical analysis on if he should go for it on 4th, or odds if he should go for the TD or settle for a field goal based off his teams analysis of the game of football. I’m not a football coach, and maybe that is common approach, but I’m curious how many coaches are as focused on the analytics per play or if they coach based off instincts and feel for the game. I’m not saying one way is right or wrong, but I’m curious if focusing so heavily on the analytics side/odds of football can cause you to overthink each play instead of just coaching the game and playing based off the feel in the moment. Paralysis by analysis in other terms.
I would be curious to learn more from the coaches on this board and their methods for how they coach or what their thoughts are on making in game decisions based off odds on each play.
