Perfect storm to handle the Micah stuff. Joey came in and created a culture of family and KEEPING kids that needed to stay. Let me correct that, keeping the right kids. He accepted Well's kids and didn't lose the wrong ones. The 2 games now are keeping the ones in-house, and attracting the ones looking.
Tahj and co stayed, the DL of last year (miss them) stayed...keep on going. We can spend all kinds of money but without a home no one stays. See Florida State, un-Elko aggie, Okie State, and many others where money is spent but no foundation to stay. (Okie state changed when TBoone left us and Ollie came on - see how many have got into portal in last 24 hours).
Joey and coaches have made mistakes. I think opinions on here might be found....but its not done without merit and fighting for the right way to do it. Micah came on and had a loyalty to Joey and Tech. How he committed in spite of loss to Oregon and did so to "boost" everyone up, he loved the culture. If we were like okie state and played Micah, bygawd, like they did Ollie (DUI, terrible teammate, attitude) the entire program would be in the portal.
The program is bigger than one person. Having Cody drilling for oil now puts an exponent on the influence that the portal adding the RIGHT guys. Saban said everyone will pay players, but have to pay the right ones. Micah was right until he wasnt. As fans we lose bragging rights with horn or aggie friends by losing him. Who cares. With the money they have thrown out they have way more to be embarrassed about on ROI. Kelly and the other producers, heck a white kid from Stephenville played because they performed every day. Thats a culture thats building.
Without the culture its just an all-star team. And, those dont last when adversity hits. I dont think you can build a culture after getting the players. The players have to want to stay and come to the Jones. I like it.
