It is my understanding that if Notre Dame gets $14M if they win tonight whereas all other teams in the Final Four get around 3.2M if they win because they have to share with their conference. If you are a blue blood type, what is there to gain out of staying in a conference. If schools like Ohio State, Texas, Alabama etc were independent they’d get at least the media payout they’re currently getting plus the amount they earn through their postseason wins.
I feel like this is something that will become more prevalent in the coming years. I wouldn’t be shocked at all if the new system had a tiered or individualized media revenue model where conferences no longer exist. Teams would still likely schedule their traditional rivals, but would allow for teams to earn their own revenue a bit more and could also lead to a system with a nationalized scheduling approach that is impossible in the current system.
