The Red Raider Confidential is sponsored by Cardinal's Sports Center. If you need Texas Tech gear or Under Armour apparel, the best place to go in our opinion is Cardinal's -- they have a tremendous location in Lubbock (Slide and S. Loop 289), a store in Plano and a fantastic selection on their website.

Texas Tech’s signal caller for the 2017 class made his varsity debut at quarterback for Cibolo Steele and had a very good showing. Junior QB Xavier Martin went 7 of 10 for 151 yards and three scores while also tacking on another 55 yards on the ground in route to a 49-14 win. Martin shared his thoughts on the week one win and some areas he hopes to improve in as the season progresses.

“It went real good. My team and I really performed well together. I think next week will be good too. I’ll be getting a lot of reps again and am ready to get out there with my team,” he said. “I’m already working on trying not to force the ball and using my legs more. If nothing is there, there is no problem tucking and running. I just don’t want to force it.”

Martin is one of only two prospects committed for the 2017 class, so it comes as no surprise that he received star treatment on September 1 when coaches were able to officially contact 2017 prospects. In fact, Martin received a DM from his future head coach right at 12am that morning.

“It was shocking. I was lying down and then got a phone notification saying ‘TTUKingsbury direct messaged you’ and I was like ‘what?’ I didn’t realize today was that day, and I had to think about it,” he said.“He was asking me how my game went last week, if I did well, he told me to keep my head straight, and take care of business in the classroom.”

Kliff Kingsbury wasn’t the only Texas Tech coach to contact the QB as many other offensive and defensive coaches reached out to the prospect as well.

“I heard from Coach Morris, Coach Jinks, and Coach Curtis this morning as well. They all pretty much said the same thing, asked about my week and told me how excited they were for me. Between them and Coach Kliff contacting me, I’m feeling extremely loved.”

Overall things are going great for the 6-foot, 170-pound QB as he is still solid with Tech and is excited to get back up to Lubbock when they play TCU on September 26.

“It’s going good. I’m still 100% committed. I’ll probably be going up there in a few weeks for the TCU game and I definitely can’t wait. I’m excited to see how they play in person, excited to talk to the coaches in person again, stuff like that.”

Outside of Texas Tech, Martin has received some interest from a few schools as of late including Oregon and Texas. Oregon reached out on September 1 as well and Texas has been in contact. Texas is recruiting him as a DB, though, but Martin said “I don’t want to play that.”

Martin and Round Rock OL Tyler Castaneda are the lone prospects committed for 2017 at the moment, but Martin feels like that will change soon. The dual-threat QB has already became the recruiter for the 2017 class and has been reaching out to many prospects over the past few weeks.

“I talked to Jaylin Nelson, Emmanuel Netherly, and Tyler, even though he is already committed. I talk to our running back Travell Lumpkin about Tech a lot. He loved the campus and loved the visit, but he is going to wait a bit longer and see what other offers he can get. I’ve been telling him that he doesn’t want to miss this opportunity.”

Cibolo Steele will play United South High School in Laredo at 7:30pm on Friday.

One of the many prospects who will be down in Lubbock this weekend on unofficial visits is 2017 Cedar Hill (TX) wide receiver Camron Buckley. Buckley picked up an offer from the Red Raiders in August and has now jumped at the first opportunity to catch the Red Raiders in person.

“Well I had been to most of the other schools that I’m interested in. I wasn’t able to make it down to Tech yet because I didn’t have an offer. Now that I have that offer, I just wanted to get down there the first week, week one, and see how they are doing.”

The three-star wide receiver will not be taking the trip alone and will be accompanied by fellow teammate, wide receiver Charleston Rambo. Both prospects are ready to check out the atmosphere surrounding Lubbock and observe the team during the first game of the year.

“I’m excited to see the environment, the coaching staff, and how they run their offense in a real game situation. I’m looking forward to getting to meet the whole coaching staff in person, having a good time up there and enjoying my experience with Rambo,” he said. “He (Rambo) is also very interested. We always talk about colleges together and we both really liked Tech so we decided to come together.”

Since the offer in August, Buckley has been staying in constant contact with the Tech coaches and even heard from the likes of Kliff Kingsbury, Eric Morris, and Kevin Curtis when the coaches could make their first official contact on September 1.

“It’s been going good. Today was actually the first day they could direct message me on twitter and the head coach, the offensive coordinator, and the defensive backs coach all messaged me on twitter this morning,” he said.

“They wanted to see how I was doing, how my first game went, and then wanted to see if they could get me up there for a game. I then told them that I was going to be there for the first game of the season. They were pretty excited to hear that.”

Texas Tech wasn’t the only school that sought after Buckley on twitter recently. With schools like Ole Miss, Alabama, Oregon, TCU, and Illinois also making contact with the wide receiver. Buckley’s recruitment really has the chance to take off during his junior season and beyond with an expected increase in scholarship offers, how does Buckley feel like Tech will fare against the rest of the competition?

“Texas Tech will always stick around. I’ve been watching them ever since I was a little kid. They throw the ball most of the time, I like the offense, the coaching staff, and what they are trying to do with that program. They are trying to get back to the program it used to be from awhile back and they are building it back from the ground up. They will always be in the conversation.”

Buckley is rated the No. 40 receiver in the nation for the 2017 class and the No. 37 player in the state of Texas. He also holds offers from Houston, TCU, and Texas.
