The Red Raider Confidential is sponsored by Cardinal's Sports Center. If you
need Texas Tech gear or Under Armour apparel, the best place to go in our
opinion is Cardinal's -- they have a brand new location in Lubbock (Slide and S.
Loop 289), a
store in Plano and a fantastic selection on
their website.

CHILDS SET TO VISIT IN JANUARY

La Grange (Texas) two-way lineman Chad Childs is scheduled to officially visit
Texas Tech on Jan. 21. The three-star prospect has been on the Red Raiders'
radar for more than two months now and is being looked at to bolster the
program's offensive line haul this February.

"It's real exciting with the whole Tech thing," he said. "I really enjoy it. I
haven't been out there and visited the campus or anything, but from what I've
seen and what I've heard, I like hearing about it and I really want to go out
there and see it. I think I have a trip planned for the 21st of January, an
official."

Childs hosted Matt Moore on a visit Thursday and Tommy Mainord, Tech's primary
recruiter for Childs, attended his last football game of the season earlier this
month.

The 6-foot-4, 260-pound standout plays both ways for La Grange -- offensive and
defensive line.

"I've been on varsity since my freshman year playing both ways," he said. "I
played tight end my freshman and sophomore year, then I moved to offensive guard
my junior year and senior year up until district, then I played tackle during
district. Then, on defense, I play defensive tackle and defensive end."

The Red Raiders are recruiting Childs for the offensive line, as are Missouri,
Oregon State and TCU; SMU, Texas State, UTSA, Wake Forest and Wyoming are
recruiting him for the defensive line.

Childs' top three is Missouri, TCU and Tech. He will visit MU next week and has
not set up a visit to Fort Worth yet.

HOWARD ON TECH'S RADAR

Houston (Texas) Wheatley athlete and potential Tech target Xavier Howard rushed
for 185 yards and two touchdowns, threw for 245 yards and had two interceptions
returned for touchdowns in his final high school football playoff game.

It's clear the kid has athleticism and he's caught the Red Raiders' attention as
they try to bolster their secondary.

Howard said he can play both cornerback and safety at the college level, and
he's being recruited as an athlete by Northwestern, Grambling State and other
FCS schools right now.

"Coach (Neal) Brown and them are looking at me as a defensive back," Howard
said. "He told me about the need for defensive backs."

Howard said an offer from Tech will depend on his SAT scores.

SCOTT VISITS JUCO RB

Tech is looking for another running back and Huntington Beach (Calif.) Golden
West C.C. standout Michael Pierre is receiving a lot of interest.

Running backs coach Chad Scott visited with Pierre earlier this week.

"It went alright, they want me to come down and visit and see the campus,"
Pierre said. "They want me to keep working hard and stuff like that."

Aside from interest from Tech, Pierre has a scholarship offer from Cal as well
as offers from New Mexico State and San Jose State and interest from Utah and
BYU.

Pierre had a pretty good sophomore season and Golden West, especially
considering he missed a few games.

"I missed the first two games because of a minor knee injury," Pierre said. "I
had damaged some cartilage in my knee and we scraped that out. Two games I
missed because I got kicked out of one on a personal foul and my coach benched
me for it. So I only played like six games and had 754 yards on 140 carries and
six touchdowns."

Without being prompted, Tech was the first school Pierre mentioned when ranking
his top four schools.

"My top four is Texas Tech, Cal, New Mexico State and San Jose," Pierre said.
"Playing in a BCS conference matters, but it doesn't matter a whole lot. Texas
Tech and Cal are schools I've got to keep in mind, but I'm going to get after it
at whatever DI school I end up at."

DAVIS TALKS TECH VISIT

Yuma (Ariz.) Arizona Western College running back Damien Williams has been
offered a scholarship at Tech.

"I've been getting a couple of looks lately," Williams said. "Arkansas talked to
me the other day, Texas Tech actually offered me and Tennessee has called and
talked to me. But right now, a lot of people haven't started to call me yet
because a lot of people probably haven't heard that I'm open. In a few more
days, I think a couple of more people will call me."

Williams said he hasn't gotten to the in-home visit stage in his recruitment,
but he has a visit set up with Arkansas on Dec. 16 and he's going to visit Tech
in January.

"Texas Tech, they told me I've got the ability to come in," Williams said. "They
didn't promise me a starting spot, but they're promising me I'll get to compete
for the chance to start and they need a person to come in and start. At first,
they weren't looking for a running back, but as a JUCO player they think I'm
mature enough to come in and play."

Williams said he's not in a hurry to end his recruitment and wants the greatest
number of options possible but added Tech and Arkansas are in good standing.

"I'm just being recruited," Williams said. "I don't know where I want to go or
who I'm interested in, there's just so much going on. Texas Tech and Arkansas
are good schools, and I'll be thinking about them, but I'm just in a
wait-and-see mode right now."
