For those not familiar, the Capital One Cup (COC) is awarded annually to the best men's and women's Division I college athletics programs in the country. Points toward the COC are based on final standings of NCAA Championships and final official coaches' polls. I believe last year was the first time Tech men's athletics beat both UT and A&M in the final COC standings. Bear in mind that the athletic budgets of both UT and A&M are more than double Tech's budget.
For 2018-2019, the Tech men's program is currently ranked #8 with 42 points, and we still have two of our strongest teams to go in baseball and #1 men's T&F. And golf is ranked #11 so not too shabby.
Compare our current standing to UT at #25 with 18 points, and A&M...well the Aggies have ZERO points, although that will change after national T&F finals.
As for the Big 12, the second highest ranked team is OU at #20 with 24 points. Simply put, Kirby Hocutt is the best AD in college athletics with one caveat; the Tech women's program has zero points and must get better. That said, it's a minor complaint. When the current Big 12 deal expires in 2024 (or is it 2025?) the men's athletic department will determine Tech's value to the Big 12 or to other P5 conferences, and it's Hocutt's job to make sure Tech is dealing from a position of strength rather than just riding UT's coattails. And right now, Tech is "swole AF"* thanks to Hocutt. So if you see him, thank him. We're lucky that the best AD loves being Tech's AD.
