On Nov. 2, 2013, he had 11 receptions for 100 yards against West Virginia.
Yet by the time the following November rolled around, Trevone Boykin was considered one of the most exciting quarterbacks in college football. He finished 2014 as the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl Offensive MVP, a second-team All-American and was fourth in Heisman Trophy voting.
And the accolades didn't stop there. He enters September as the betting favorite to win the Heisman and is the preseason first-team All-America quarterback by ESPN, among others.
Advanced metrics, however, say that Boykin isn't a great QB -- or at least he wasn't last year. Total QBR analyzes every play a quarterback makes, including the electrifying runs that put Boykin on SportsCenter Top 10 reels a few times last fall. But even considering his rushing acumen, he ranked just 21st nationally in QBR with a rating of 73.6 on the zero-to-100 scale. That was one-tenth of a point behind Grant Hedrick of Boise State.
And when you split QBR to look at Boykin in crucial situations, his ratings drop further. He ranked 32nd on third down, 39th when the margin on the scoreboard was within 14 points, and 69th in the red zone.
including this touchdown pass.
The good news for TCU is that it's reasonable to expect improvement in this area, and if that happens, the Horned Frogs should be the playoff contender that most people are expecting them to be. Boykin is already an elite playmaker, but to become an elite quarterback, he'll have to upgrade his efficiency.
For some reason (especially after reading this article) I think he has a bad year. I think TCU loses 4 games this year, I feel like last year was just somewhat fluky for him.
