The "KU fans are ready to get rid of Bill Self" thread got me to thinking about MBB coaches. If you discount recruiting (yes I know this IS what determines how successful you have a chance to be to a large extent), then you are left with actual ability to coach during a game. The coaches with the greatest knowledge of the game, who analyze the game most quickly and make the right changes at the right times tend to win more games.
So who do you think are the best 3-5 "game coaches" in D1 ball? To get things started I would suggest:
Coach K - yeah he recruits well, but he is a super game coach too.
Tommy Izzo - brilliant tactician and motivator
Jim Boeheim - great system coach, really good in game adjustments
Jamie Dixon - Univ of Pittsburgh HC. Really solid game manager.
Bob Huggins - hate to add him because I despise the guy. But he knows what he wants to get done, both with his kids and the refs, and he manages to get his way far more often than not.
