Best friends grandfather passed away

So my best friends grandfather passed away. I never met the guy and honestly didn't know my friends grandparents were still around. Am I expected to go to the funeral? Am I evil if I don't? The funeral is 2.5 hours away.

If it was his immediate family (father/mother/etc) I would not be questioning if I should go.

Been friends for over 20 years.
