This year's team:
I think the key to the 5 game run is the next game at WVU. I believe that we match up really well with them. They live on turnovers and Tech just doesn't turn it over very much. If we can keep Tall Farquaad (Nathan Adrian) from having a career game and make someone other than Carter beat us, we have a very good chance in that game. Win that one and we only need to hold serve at home and maybe a 1st round win in the B12 tourney to get into the big dance. I really believe that all 5 are winnable.
If we make the tournament, bet on this team. We will have a bunch of players who do not want to end their careers. We have enough athleticism to play anyone and nobody will outcoach Beard. If we get in, I would not be shocked with a Sweet 16 run.
Next season:
We are going to be VERY deep at guard. A position that we are very shallow at currently. I believe that the combo of Edwards and Webster will be the most talented duo at the point since Koy Smith and Jason Martin. I think that we will have guards that can fill it up at the 2 with Evans, Branger and Stevenson. I think we will have real options at the 3 by being able to play Gray, Stevenson, Culver, Smith and Francis. We have several options at the 4 with Mading, Smith, Gray and Hamilton. We have a legit 5 with Odiase and can use Hamilton, Mading or Smith depending on matchups.
This will easily be the most athletic team that Tech has placed on the floor in my time watching the team. (The only team that was anywhere close was RMK's first team with Emmitt, Marshall, Powell, Ellis and Chavis. However, that team was nowhere near as deep with athletes as this team.) I believe we will finally be 11+ deep in Big 12 players. My only slight concern with this team is that they dont really fill out the uniform. Odiase being healthy will be even more important next year than it is this year. However, if he is able to hold down the middle and we gel like I expect us to, we are going to be a Top 25 team and Top 4 in the Big 12.
I think folks are underestimating what Jared Culver can give to this team immediately. Same with Mading. These guys are legit big time athlete scorers. THIS IS GOING TO BE FUN!!!
