Well, pitching is struggling just a bit right now. Gingery settled down this week and got back on track after a short outing last week. I wasn't a fan of starting Patterson on Friday, as he has been a very reliable arm in your pen. If it didn't work, you burn a lot of your pen and a good arm for later in the series. It turned out to be somewhat like that, and the Red Raiders lost the Friday (Thursday for this week) night game for the second time in three series. However, Tech was able to come back and take the last two games to win the road series.
Martin should be back either this week or next (most likely next) and he will be able to allow the pen to rest more than they have been the last few weeks. We have a lot of freshmen coming out of the pen, and these kids have never pitched this much in a season. They are having to learn how to push through being tired and worked more. When Martin returns, I think you will suddenly see the pen improve...
I would like to see Lanning get the Friday start this week, with Kilian first out of the pen to relieve. I think both of those guys are starting to figure it out, and I'm excited to see them grow for the rest of the year. And how about McMillion's 1-2-3 ninth inning to slam the door shut on Friday? He was ahead of every batter he faced before he retired them. He's quickly turning into a good closer for us, as he recorded his 4th save of the year.
Oh, hello there, Michael Davis. Have yourself a little weekend going 7-15 with 2 homers and 4 RBI. Farhat, welcome to the big show as well with 2 homers on the weekend and what should have been a Sports Center top 10 catch. Hitting has obviously picked up since the OU series, being helped tremendously by Davis, Farhat and Orlando Garcia all coming up big. Jung only went 3-11 on the weekend, but was able to draw 5 walks on the weekend with only 2 Ks. His plate appearance is that of an upperclassman; coupled with his ability to hit the opposite way, he's one of my favorite hitters to watch.
One thing I would like people to consider with Martin being out, we are now facing (for the most part) a Friday night ace and throwing a freshman or a bullpen guy against the other team's #1. That's a lot of pressure on the hitters to produce.
WVU helped Tech out by taking 2 of 3 against Texas Christian this past weekend, moving Tech back into second place, only one game back of TCU. We could very easily be tied for first if we had not of blown that Sunday Baylor game. But, that's not the case. TCU has played 2 home series and 2 away, while Tech has played 1 home series and 3 away. We will close the year with 3 home and only 1 away. The title is well within reach, and we still control our own destiny. However, that is not the end prize, being a national seed and reaching Omaha again is what these coaches really want.
As far as Dusek goes (this next paragraph is purely speculation), I'm hoping that the coaches are keeping his pitch count/IP low, and then start him later in the year, maybe around big 12 tournament time. This team is still full of youngsters and newcomers, and we will have ups and downs. But, trust the coaches to have them ready to compete and make another deep run in the tournament.
Guns up!
