Being athletic does not equal being a better football player. I have had a lot of concern with our recruiting strategy of recruiting “measurables” instead of skilled players. You can be tall and fast but if your football brain doesn’t keep up with the speed of the game you will play slow all day. All those athletes last night looked slow and lost against hungry “slower” football players. Maybe the reason you have position coaches evaluate recruits is to make sure a player has the right Skills to play and not just the requisite 40 time. Wes Welker would have never been offered by this recruiting system, he would have been too slow and short. This coaching issue is compounded with trying to teach “athletes” how to be football players. The year 3 results that showed up last night are an indictment on our recruiting process.
