Ireland offered very low taxes to Apple to headquarter their European operations there. Apple employs 6000 people in Ireland. Now the EU says Apple owes Ireland $14 billion in back taxes, saying the low rate Ireland and Apple agreed to is below the 12.5% standard tax rate of Ireland.

Ireland says they don't want the money, they want to have Apple stay in Ireland.

France and Germany have said they back the EU and want Apple to pay Ireland to allow Ireland to pay off some of their debt.

Meanwhile, the US government is saying EU is unfairly picking on US companies for taxes, and the transatlantic free trade agreement has met a standstill and by accounts of those closely involved is dead.

Me thinks the EU will fall apart, as both Merkel and Hollande have said that if any more countries exit like the UK did, the EU will not survive. Well, the EU seems to be putting their noses into business they shouldn't, such as the Apple/Ireland agreement and forcing countries to take a quota of immigrants. They seem to be doing a good job at making others consider leaving the EU.
