Even though I voted against Hillary, this kind of sums me up too. At least on this issue.

A CNN/ORC poll out today highlights the danger for Democrats who continue to pursue a strategy of “resistance” to the Trump administration. Even many people who don’t like the President still want him to succeed. And they increasingly think he can help them succeed, too.

Donald Trump is making me gain weight. I start the day with liquids, but after the morning news, I eat pancakes smothered in maple syrup!

On the surface, the latest nationwide survey might seem reassuring to leaders of the resistance, especially since the polling was conducted after Mr. Trump’s successful speech last week to a joint session of Congress. CNN/ORC finds only a slight improvement in the President’s standing with the public. Just 45% of respondents approve of the job he’s doing—up just one point in the last month—while 52% disapprove—down just one point. Mr. Trump is also still underwater and shows only modest improvement when survey participants are asked about their overall opinion of him—45% of respondents have a favorable view compared to 53% with an unfavorable one.

But beyond the headlines CNN/ORC finds a quiet surge on a key issue. A full 55% of respondents approve of Mr. Trump’s handling of the economy, versus only 41% who disapprove. His 14-point edge on this issue compares to an advantage of just six points a month ago.

Last week’s Reuters/Ipsos poll had similar findings: the President remains slightly underwater on overall ratings, but 53% in the survey approve of his handling of the economy, compared to just 36% who disapprove.

We noted last week the WSJ/NBC finding that while Mr. Trump remains historically unpopular for a president early in his tenure, he’s improving. And if relatively few Americans like him, they like his political adversaries Rep. Nancy Pelosi and Sen. Chuck Schumer even less.

These recent poll results align with the findings of your humble correspondent. Over a delicious dinner on Saturday in the suburbs, an unscientifically selected sample of New Jersey residents was generally unwilling to identify as pro-Trump but reported feeling increasingly anti-anti-Trump.

David Letterman: 'I would have gone to work on Trump'

There’s certainly ample reason to think that the economy can grow faster with Mr. Trump in the White House than with Barack Obama. On Friday the Institute for Supply Management’s measurement of non-manufacturing activity soundly beat expectations with its best reading since October of 2015. This rise in the U.S. services sector suggests overall economic growth of more than 3% per year. Goodbye, new normal.

This bullish sign also carries a warning for Mr. Trump. “Industries that provide services,” notes the Journal, “account for roughly 80% of the U.S. economy.” If Mr. Trump still intends to change trade policy to eliminate the U.S. trade deficit in manufactured goods, he risks foreign retaliation against American services companies that have been running a growing trade surplus. Meanwhile, inside our borders, the Trump economic plan is largely about less government intervention in the economy and it has inspired investors to pour into U.S. stocks.

Trumponomics may also be creating a new American majority, composed of people who may or may not like the President but can’t stand his opponents.
