Ok, so this season is not gonna be what any of us hoped for, or anything close to what the media and coaches led us to believe.
CFP Dark Horse, dead
January Bowl, dead
Big 12 Champs, not completely dead but definitely looking like Wesley at the end of Princess Bride
Pretty much wasted all these seniors
Question becomes what are we playing for? Only answer at this point is building for the future around Morton.
Couple of thoughts:
1. While your offense has struggled mightily (if you take out the Tarelton game, it’s your worst offense in 25 years at 25 PPG), what’s wild is they have actually out gained 3 of the 4 opponents and the only one you didn’t was Oregon and they only out gained you by 16 yards. I mean, you have moved the ball, you just haven’t scored points.
If that some how changes, this season could turn around in a hurry. You have Houston and Baylor in the next 2 and if your defense performs + you actually figure out how to score points, then there’s a good chance you’re 3-3 with K State coming to town. Things start to look a bit different.
And again, you have moved the ball enough to win, you just haven’t scored the points to do so….
2. You are a combined 17 points from being undefeated. That’s it. 17 points and we are talking about 4-0. 9 points and you are at least 3-1.
What’s a silver lining but also rather depressing is you mostly beat yourself in those games. Turnovers, penalties, not capitalizing in the red zone. These are things you can control. Turnovers alone lost you the game vs Oregon and probably Wyoming. Both games you had the opportunity to step on their throat and instead you pretty much stepped on your own.
Clean up some of those things and you might become a pretty salty team over night.
3. Behren Morton. Yes he’s a sophomore, yes it was a rooouugghhh game Saturday. But man, there are times he makes a throw and you are just in awe.
The TD to Bradley Saturday was delicious. On the money. He has a zip on the ball that you can’t coach, tremendous arm strength. He has all the leadership qualities you want in a QB.
He just needs game snaps. He needs the experience. But that kid can play. We’ve seen that potential and then some. He just needs to figure out the mental side. And he’s about to have the keys for (knock on wood) 8 full games.
Final thought: I don’t know if this offense figures it out. I am really not believing in Kittley at the moment. As I said, this offense is historically bad. Even with Matt Wells who was a clock management guy, you averaged 28 points at worst. Kittley’s offense is sitting at around 29, take out Tarelton and it’s 25.
But, they are moving the ball and if they figure out the kinks to putting points on the board there is still a lot to play for, you can still go bowling at the very least. You are 17 points from being an undefeated Top 15 team. This defense has shown that in their own right.
More than any of that though, now is the time to see if Morton can grow into his potential. Because he really does have some special to his game. We’ve been waiting a minute for that next Texas Tech gunslinger and now is his opportunity.
See, positive-ish.
