After having all afternoon to digest it, watch the rest of the CFB slate, here are a few thoughts from Tech's chinny-chin-chin escape in Lawrence.
-Teams play bad games every year. It's human nature, especially for 80 college-aged athletes. That includes the teams that make the playoff. The difference is that good teams don't lose those games. Despite how bad they played today, mostly offensively, the Red Raiders found a way to gut out a win, even if it was falling down the stairs. A win is a win, and Tech is 5-2. Onto next week.
-At some point this year, Tech's defense was going to have to bail out the offense for a win. It happens on a yearly basis. I just never thought it would be against Kansas. Kudos to Johnson and the rest of the D for coming up with the play to win the game when they had to.
-On offense, the whole thing was a flaming disaster, mostly around the redzone. WRs didn't make plays and dropped balls, the O-line was erratic and leaky, and Mahomes held onto the ball too long, made bad decisions, and was just off with his accuracy. Everything that could go wrong went wrong. And they still put up 23 points as a unit.
-On Pat: here was the first game where he looked like a sophomore to me. Sure, some of the sacks were on the O-line, but make no mistake that some were on the QB, too. He held onto it too long or wouldn't throw it away on multiple occasions, and his downfield pick was bad. He was trying to make a play when nothing was there out of stubbornness because it's worked most of the year. Credit to Kansas for being very disciplined when Pat scrambled around, too.
-Pat was going to have a game like this at some point. Every young QB does. Just so happened to be against Kamsas.
-DeAndre Washington? Yeah, he should've gotten the ball more, IMO, especially after breaking off the long one I thought might seal the game late. He just wills things to happen, and when things are going wrong, he just needs to get the ball, IMO. He was today's lone bright spot on offense.
-I thought Tony Brown should've played lire than he did, and I bet he starts getting more snaps. He made several really good plays today.
-Tech slept through the game on offense, and it's their worst performance since the K-state game last year, maybe worst since 2013. I've also seen this offense play too much to think that's the norm from here on out. They won't play that bad again, IMO.
-Tech got the win, and they get to start over new with a big lesson tomorrow. On to Oklahoma.
