New men's basketball SID Matt Dunaway was good enough to send the media a few notes from today's 54-46 win in the first game in Canada against McGill. First, here's what Coach Tubby Smith had to say about the contest:
“I was really impressed with our hustle, our effort and our energy,” head coach Tubby Smith said. “You don’t get these types of experiences very often – once every four years, you get to a chance to play during the summer like this. I learned a lot from this first game. Our guys were very competitive. We’ve got to learn, overachieve. In order for us to build and to get better, we have to keep overachieving. That’s what we have to keep instilling in our guys.”
“I would like to see us cut down on our turnovers and shoot the ball better,” Smith said. “The gym was hot and wasn’t air conditioned. It’s something that our players have been spoiled with. I could tell that the ball was slippery for the players at times … We have to concentrate on those areas that we didn’t do well at. That’s shooting, taking care of the ball and rebounding.”
*Tech went 20-60 from the floor overall for a 33 percent make rate today, and they held McGill to 18-71, 25.35 percent.
*Jordan Jackson led Tech with 11 points, going 5-6 from the FT line, and Devon Thomas had 7 points and 4 rebounds.
*Keenan Evans also had a solid outing in the exhibition with 5 points and a team leading 8 rebounds.
