A.c. unit repair questions

So my compressor went out last night and I am lookin at about 600 bucks for Freon. Getting a quote for a new system as well as our entire system is from the late 70s/early 80s.

I would be doing this through American home shield. Supposedly they can get me a new system for 4-5k.

I am wondering if anyone has done this with AHS before. And if anyone on here can help me with what I need to know to make sure I'm not getting screwed in pricing and/or product.
