Texan Harlon Block, 4 other Marines, and a Navy Corpman raised our colors above Mt. Suribachi on the 4th day of the invasion of Iwo Jima. This was of course the second raising of the flag.
The smaller, first flag was raised around 10:20AM on Feb 23, 1945 by Harold Schrier, Raymond Jacobs, Hank Hansen (who was mistaken as Harlon Block in the photograph above), Ernest "Boots" Thomas, Phil Ward, and John Bradley I believe - all Marines.
