The NFL is having a vote on Thursday on a proposal to basically eliminate the onside kick and give the kicking team the option of having the ball on its own 25 with a 4th-and-15 play. Caveats are team must be trailing, it can only be used in regulation and no more than twice a game.
Reason is to put some late suspense back into a game. Onside kick conversion rate was only 8 of 56 in 2019. Speculation is that it could pass.
Some might see it as gimmicky, but I kinda like it. I wouldn't mind seeing it used on a 2-year trial basis in both NFL and college. You still have to convert a 4th and 15 way on your end of the field. If you fail, your opponent has it virtually in the red zone.
