USNWR & TTU School of Medicine (Good)

The US News & World Report released their updated rankings this morning. Instead of assigning a numerical rank to each school, they instead placed schools into tiers. They evaluated medical schools based on two dimensions: research and primary care. This year TTU was one of fifteen schools to place in the top tier for primary care. It's great to see them receiving such great publicity.

Overall, the State of Texas did well with the rankings this year. Baylor College of Medicine & UT Southwestern were both in the top 15 for the research category, and UNT HSC joined us in the top 15 for primary care.

New House Agreement Impact on Matador Club

Will the Matador Club still be able to provide NIL deals above and beyond the revenue sharing from the athletic dept?

"One of the biggest looming uncertainties as part of the settlement agreement is its impact on third-party, booster-backed collectives. Collectives provide millions to athletes in, what many believe to be, cash incentives disguised as endorsement deals for the use of their name, image and likeness (NIL).

Language in the settlement seeks to eliminate or greatly reduce what many college leaders describe as “phony” NIL payments from booster organizations to athletes. The settlement does this through an assortment of rules and an enforcement mechanism that is protected through the court. For instance...

  • Boosters — or any third-party entity or business, for that matter — are expressly prohibited from striking NIL deals with athletes unless they can prove the agreements are genuine with rates that align with “similarly situated individuals with comparable NIL value” who are not players at that school, the settlement reads.
  • All third-party NIL deals of a $600 value or more must be approved by a newly created clearinghouse that is expected to vet the agreements for authenticity by using fair market value standards. For those deals not approved, the NCAA, conferences and/or a new third-party enforcement entity has authority to deem athletes ineligible and/or to fine schools for violations, as they do now.
  • However, unlike now, those punishments can be appealed to an agreed-upon neutral arbitrator. The arbitration process, according to the settlement, is designed to be a more accelerated and neutral procedure than the NCAA’s current infractions situation, where committees of school representatives determine matters. The arbitrator must rule within 45 days of the beginning of the arbitration process, but an extension is possible. The arbitrator’s ruling is “final and binding,” according to the settlement.
  • During arbitration, enforcement penalties — for instance, a player ruled ineligible — will be stayed until a ruling. Arbitrators have the power to request the production of documents and witness testimony. It’s unclear if that entails subpoena power."

Was very cool to chat with Tech's biggest transfer. A lot of cool nuggets in this one and it felt good to get the rust off after a summer without writing a feature. Big things coming next week for the start of fall camp. Happy Friday!

Anyone attend Gateway Church in Southlake?

Growing up, my family and I attended Gateway for over 10 years. I now go to a different church closer to where we live, but this is just sick and disheartening. I feel so deceived. Just a reminder we can’t put our faith into Christian “Leaders”.

Curious on other people’s thoughts in regards to this situation. He definitely should have gone/should go to prison for this

Tech and Soaring

Just received my Hamilton Texas newspaper. It was about the National Glider contest.

The paper said that on Labor Day ,5 of the longest flights in the WORLD were out of Hamilton. This is a all Tech and West Texas group from Odessa and Midland. One member was staring WR at Permian and one Center on Spike Dykes championship team at Midland Lee. This should make Texas Spur proud, he lived there for a time.

Lubbock you can be much better than this with some work. 70 percent of Lubbock days are flyable and 50 percent are Soarable all year. Summer best into late fall. hubcity

Trying to judge interest in Sailplane/ Glider / Airplane interest in general Lubbock area

I have posted Lubbock is a great place to fly and fly sailplanes. I have just pledged $ 45,000 to this matter for a training glider. This will be a 501 C.

I cannot reveal the location yet but you will be happy, easy drive.

For planning we would like you to send a letter to my son in Houston. Tell us male or female, age, and any past flying experience in gliders or power planes and time in those aircraft.

We will need a tow plane or rent one. A 182 or Pawnee would be great.

I was a founder in Houston club in late 70, 19 of us and now 200.

I was one of two founders of Hamilton Club now 90. WE have a National contest going right now.

If you are interested I suggest you buy and read, The Joy of Soaring. Also Morority New Mex has a great program where you can go and get your ticket. in a week I think. Glider time counts one for one to power.

Send info to my son, a pastor and he will do a spread sheet. Bo Fisher 1909 Jessie Lane, Pasadena, Texas 77502. We will have to grow slow. Matador Club guys will be most welcome. We will also have a Cessna 150 for members to fly .

It will take us some time to get our ducks in a row on this great needed project . Remember 60 percent of all glider pilots were trained in Lubbock. Those were glider that just glided down.

Sailplanes had long wings like U 2 spy plane and sensitive instruments that tell you when you are in Rising air. I have been to 16000 ft over Littlfield at a contest there. My longest flight was 7.5 hours and 270 miles. Years ago some Odessa guy flew across the Platt River in NEB. Google ASW 12 sailplanes.

Look at Hamilton Soaring Club web page., and Texas Soaring Association and Houston Soaring Club to get a feel. Another fellow and I started Hamilton Soaring Club it in a town about like Slaton. Texas Spur and I flew down there once long ago. It was a WW2 Glider field. Now have 90 members and 10 young teen ladies who are very good. You have to help each other so it builds life long friendships. Google pictures of various sailplanes and take a look. Hubcity

I have posted about a Sailplane / Glider Club For Tech Folks

I live in Ft Worth, but grew up in Lubbock. I flew sailplanes and contests at Hobbs, etc. for years and towed glider as well in L 19 and Pawnee. I have a Citibria now. Never put a dent in anything.

I wanted to start a sailplane / Glider Club in the Lubbock area. I helped financially form one at Hamilton and Houston.

I have been talking with area airports about this. We have one that is interested.

I would buy the glider. Maybe we name it Raider Red! Ha

The folks think it will be slow going on the glider side but are to be a 501 C so donations like mine will be tax deductible.

We have access to a network of folks with the ability to donate some Equipment. They suggest and I agree, to set up a Flying Club with a Cessna 150 or the like and then tip toe into the glider side. Power pilots transition very east to gliders.

If you have the time and interest there is a lot of activity at Morarity New Mex. I think you can go there and get your glider rating fast. Then all glider hours transfer one for one to power. I will keep you informed when I am told I can identify the place. We try to find airports one to one half hours from Lubbock. You have wonderful weather all around you. I have flow 2 contest at Littlefield.

I was one of the Founder of the Houston Club in late 70s, now 200 with 4 top competition pilots and one on US World Team, Ken Sorenson.

I was co founder of Hamilton Soaring Club about 4 years ago, about the size of Crosbyton and now has 90 members' and a National contest starting next week. The largest group in years, 35 folks from all over USA. If you are interested buy the book, Tech RB Bath uncle, a Medical Doctor Gave us a $60,000 Glider!! The joy of Soaring, the basic book .
