STORY: Kenny Perry ponders Kelly's punt return decisions, kicking competition pres. by Prosper Energy Management

Here's some interesting quotes on special teams from Kenny Perry this afternoon. @J. Ramirez will have another story off this interview tomorrow.

How does the kicking battle continue?
"We're 100% so it's going to continue. Those two, they're doing everything. The coolest part about those guys, you know, you guys are aware, specialists are a little bit different breed. We've got a great group of specialists. So those two, they just feed off each other. And you know, Reese going to get his opportunities. Gino is going to get his opportunities. Reese is going to kickoff like he's been. Stone finally kicked one right, he's got a huge leg that first time we put him in there, first game, kind of freaked out. So I want to give him another chance, because he's another young kid that's got a really big leg. So I like giving everyone a shot. You know, these kids work hard to get a chance, and it's good to have a game like that where I could feel comfortable doing that."

How do Reese and Gino push one another?

"I hope they do, because I've created competition with them since last spring. But they don't act like it. I mean, they like each other, they help each other out, they hang out. So it's not a situation where, you know, you remember Roger Staubach and whoever he got into a fight with back in the 70s. it's not one of those situations. But, you know, I just love being around them.

Is there a kicker that has the bigger leg, like if you faced a 50-plus yarder?
"You know what? They're both pretty much the same. They both can hit the ball 50 plus. So you know, once you want to be whoever's up, and then the next one, if he makes it or misses it, and that next guy's gonna get the next chance at it."

Have you discussed how this may end? Does it just end if a guy misses one kick?

"I'll just kind of move on. They know it, it's about performance. You miss a 50 something yard field goal, that's a different deal. The hardest part of me is, you know, those 40 yard field goals, those are the ones we got to make, you know, we kick a field goal under 40 yards. That's the ones. You know, you kick some over that, obviously, their odds go down. Coach has done a good job with those kicks this year, you know, we've given them opportunities to hit some kicks and get on a roll. Your first kick being a 58 yard kick out of the box, and you know that's nothing comes good after that."

How have you felt about Josh Kelly as a punt returner? I saw you got Drae in the game late on Saturday.

"You know, we're trying to get Drae some more touches back there, because, you know, people aren't going to kick to him, and I don't blame them. But Josh, you know, we gotta work on some decisions. That's probably been the biggest. We gotta help him blocking wise, but we've made some bad decisions back there. Now, decisions. When I say bad decisions, Josh is trying to make a play. It's a big difference of, you know, just not knowing and trying to make a play. However, that affects you and affects your field position, which you guys know, I'm a big deal on that. And so we've got to get better helping him clear lanes, and then he's got to make better decisions. And then, yeah, we're trying to get Dre, you know, just more comfortable back there. So we'll see what happens."

On Kelly's return at Washington State where he picked it up at the two, would you have preferred him to just let it get downed?
"You just gotta live with that, you know, kind of what went against us on that type deal. You just don't want to get into habit of doing that, because bad things happen. We just gotta make better decisions. He knows that. I know that. But yeah, that's that happens sometimes, and you just, you know, good, good kick by them."

OT Yeti Customer Service (good)

I’ll go ahead and say I’ve been a yeti fan boy since the original YouTube commercials. I had the m30 hopper from when it came out 10+ years ago and after our Labor Day trip, it finally gave out. Zipper was already ripping and then it finally just popped off when trying to zip it back up.

I didn’t exactly treat it very well, either. So I go into the yeti store in Houston yesterday to send it in. The manager was fantastic, gave my girls some free stickers, and told me she’d get back to me by Wednesday.

She just emailed me letting me know that they are sending me a brand new m30 and are retiring my old one as long as I was okay with it. Such a quick and easy experience where everyone was pleasant.

Figured I’d share some positive experiences with a company when we tend to have so many bad ones. Thank you for coming to my dear facebook.

This week's Big XII slate

Some pretty interesting games this weekend.

KU @ WVU (-2.5) 11am ESPN2
UH @ Cincy (-5.0) 11am FS1
Arkansas St @ Iowa St (-21.0) 1pm ESPN+
Utah @ OSU (-2.5) 3pm Fox
TCU @ SMU (+2.5) 4pm The CW
BU @ CU (-1.5) 7pm Fox
KSU @ BYU (+7.0) 9:30pm ESPN

WVU needing a win in a bad way. Utah's Cam Rising left the game but I'm guessing he'll play...? TCU/SMU in the meteor game of the week. Not sure what to think of BU @ CU. A little surprised KSU is favored by that much on the road, but I haven't seen BYU play.

SPITBALLIN' How confident are you in Texas Tech after Saturday's annihilation of North Texas?

It feels good to wake up and type this out and not be in a bad mood already thinking about what went wrong the day before. It was really a tale of two sides of the ball and for all the perusing that has been going on around here about “complementary football,” that was finally it.

Let’s start with the defense, who I thought were the real stars of the show yesterday. I was overall impressed with several phases of that side, and not just from the turnover standpoint. This was the first game from the defensive front that it looked like they had a real fire and put that on the field.

Isaac Smith was giving the offensive tackles hell all game and even on the play where he got flagged for a horsecollar, he made a nice move to the tackle’s inside shoulder to get the pressure. That looked more like what we had seen from him two years ago. Dooda Banks and DB Carroll had nice games and Jayden Cofield continues to be a nice piece in that unit as well.

The guy I do also want to highlight is Braylon Rigsby. Had you not been paying too close attention throughout the week, you would not have thought anything different about seeing Rigsby lined up on the edge considering he’s naturally an interior guy, but I thought he really flashed from the outside linebacker spot. If Rigsby is someone who can continue to give you consistent snaps that will be a major plus to what we originally thought was one of the deeper rooms on the team, to now one of the thinnest due to injuries.

When the front four is getting the kind of push like what they were, it really just makes everybody else’s jobs easier. Going back to one of my keys to the game that I put out on Thursday, this defense put Chandler Morris in tough situations and he crumbled under the pressure.

Could you attribute the tip drill interceptions to good luck? Sure, but just consider how many times in recent memory where the luck pendulum has not swung Tech’s way in the slightest. Sometimes the ball just has to bounce the right way and it certainly did yesterday. I’m not gonna chalk up the entire defensive performance to that, though, I think the guys deserve their credit for making plays and flying around all over the place. Overall, a much more inspired performance and the effort made it all possible.

For all the grief I spoke last Sunday about Zach Kittley and Behren Morton, really just the offense as a whole, I probably don’t have enough good things to say this week. 45 points from the offense in the first half tells a pretty good story about the way they handled business.

I went from nearly ripping my own eyes out having to watch an onslaught of screens to being pleasantly surprised by the variety and creativity that the offense rolled out yesterday. Morton looked much sharper, his reads were cleaner and he looked confident. The offense did a good job of seeing what the defense was doing and attacking their weaknesses, rather than letting the defense dictate their strategy.

The RPO and play action games were killer because UNT was so committed to stopping the run and taking away the underneath action. I saw a lot of man coverage from UNT and Tech attacked this perfectly with crossers, slants, the play action where the safety bit down hard and Johncarlos Miller ran free up the middle of the field, it was like clockwork. This is what everybody went into the week with pitchforks and torches about. And by golly it worked.

This was exactly the kind of game I think a lot of us were waiting to see from this team. Now, my next question is can these Red Raiders make performances like this a trend rather than an outlier? Should I have radical optimism or lingering skepticism about this team moving forward? Time will tell...
